Oxytetracyline isn't a very ineffective antibiotic, and Tylan only treats a few bacteria, and it must be given at least twice a day, so it's quite possible that you need to modify your treatment program.

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong place. Please advise if I should post it elsewhere.

I currently have an MS problem (self diagnosed) in my flock and just today discovered this scholarly article. I'd like to start a discussion please on the merits/or not of the treatment plan suggested in the article.

I've read that Denagard is thought to be the best treatment, but unfortunately this medicine is not one I can buy in Thailand.

Many thanks :)

Hi all, my 6 week old lavender Orpington chick is not doing well. This all started yesterday both of her eyes are swollen and red and seem very irritated and like very watery. She keeps her eyes closed for the most part. I've isolated her from the other chicks. Her breathing sounds heavy. Her poop is normal and she's been eating and drinking. Just laying down a lot more then normal.

Have you found any mold in the bedding or near the water stations?
So you see foam or bubbles in the eyes?

It's so hard to know what's going on. It could be a respiratory illness like Infectious Bronchitis, Mycoplasma or one of the many other illness chickens can have. Moldy bedding, dusty feed/bedding ammonia odors and poor ventilation can also cause some respiratory distress.

Since you notice watery eyes, flush them with saline to clear them. You may want to take her off shavings and place her on puppy pads or towels, to see if bedding (environment) is the cause.

If you feel it's respiratory illness you can try giving injectable Tylan50 to see if it helps - it can be given orally or by injection 1/4"deep in the breast muscle. (Dosage of Tylan50 is 1cc per 5lb) - you need to weigh her. You can give it 2x a day. Keep in mind antibiotics will not cure respiratory illness but can help with secondary infections - respiratory illnesses are contagious and birds are usually considered carriers, even if they recover.

Without more symptoms, you may want to try something like VetRx first to see if there is any improvement - this might help if the cause is environmental.

Taking her to a vet for some testing would be your best option, this way you know what you are dealing with and get the correct treatment. Keep her warm and hydrated. Offer some poultry vitamins in her water.

Keep us posted.

Thank you very much for your response. She's not sneezing or coughing from what I can tell. Her eyes are just swollen and she's keeping them shut for the most part. When she opens them they are very watery and red. I've put vitamins in her water and I've been dipping her beak every hour. She's sleeping a lot and I don't see any mucus in the nose area it just sounds like she's congested. I ordered vetRX but it won't be here till Monday. I will keep her eyes clean and head up to the feed store and tractor supply to see if they have anything on hand to help. Again thanks for your help I really appreciate it.
