Okay, genetics folks. I have two chicks from Sammie Jo sired by Deacon. One is yellow/Delaware colored like its mom. The other is solid black. For those not familiar, here are the parents.

Sammie Jo, out of two barred parents who were each Delaware x Barred Rock (Rex#2 and Delia)



Deacon Jones, Goober-Extraodinaire, Delaware x Terrorist (Tiny the Terrorist, solid black Ameraucana/EE/Sumatra/Weirdness Personified); in fact, that is Sammie in the feed bowl.



My question: am I correct in assuming that the chicks are basically sexed by color, Dellie colored is male, black is pullet? Or can I go by that at all with this pairing?

I have only hens right now, but the boys I have had in the past were good eating

No, you Can't sexed them by color since they 're not true breeds. But they are 50% delaware

Hmm, I wondered if it was the same when my single factor barred rooster (Sammie's sire, Deacon's brother) produced black pullets with the BR hens. All blacks were pullets and I could count on that genetically, I was told and it did hold true. Since Sammie carries a barring gene and Deacon is single barred like his brother, seemed the same would hold true in this case, solid black chick would be a pullet.

those were pure br. This is not. (I'm just going by theory)

Is not the white color that would muddle things, the thing is that both are hybrids. Expect any color.

Mr King, the barring gene is the same in every breed - a sex-linked gene that predictably produces barring according to genetic rules . Here is a helpful guide to barring -
