The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

So I moved the right roo in with the buff silkie hen and blind girl and everything was fine. In fact I expected "Romeo" to be a rapist because he's never been with a silkie hen. But the first thing he did was find her a treat. He was a perfect gentleman. It's been 3 days and I don't think he's made his move yet. She seems to like him and approaches him all the time like they've always been together.

With blind girl, she seems fine with it. Years ago she and a few other Polish used to jump the fence to spend the night with the silkie klan. The silkies just treated them like their children came to visit!

We had torrential rain here the last few days. Everything was nice and dry and now the ground is muddy or squishy. I need to get some plants in the ground and ? When.

We were actually getting a little dry, but it rained most of yesterday and last night - soft, steady rain tho not storms. I did get a neglected Perennial bed 3/4 weeded out, should be able to finish it this weekend. There is some strange long flowering stalk coming up, I'm sure is was deliberately planted but don't remember what it is. Should be able to tell once it blooms. The hens were out and helped me scratch things up, I think they thought I was quite inefficient in the digging department.

Got a call from Sand Hill last night, my chicks are on the way - even with express shipping they are going to be 2 days in transit. Hopefully not 3, that would be a disaster! :fl

That’s good to know, I haven’t heard a peep from sandhill, they are suppose haha o replace my chicks from last year.
What did you order?

Erminettes, Field Sussex, and Barred Holland (yes some stripy birds!). I think they are finally recovering from a disastrous year, it was Linda that called me. I know they are very happy that she finally made it home after a serious and prolonged illness that left her hospitalized far from home for months. The people that stepped in to "help" last year were not very chicken educated, I am thinking, and orders got badly mixed up.

Yes, i read theif blog, what an awful year they had. I am glad I contacted them. The day my order was done is the day linda went back to the hospital with that bad infection from her surgery. Then this year the weather has been awful for them. I got barred Holland’s last year. My rooster is beautiful, me hens are small but they lay well.

I'm glad she's getting better, heard that was an awful time for them. I've never heard of Field Sussex, not sure I've even heard of Erminettes, will have to look those up.

Chicks came this morning! They sent 34 (of 25 ordered) and 31 made it alive - a few look a little shaky, but astonishing such tiny creatures can make it from Iowa to Northern Michigan intact at all.

I'm glad to hear about the Hollands, I was hoping for smaller birds that layed well. If you want to know about the Field Sussex, it is something they have developed themselves - https://www.sandhillpreservation.com/sussex. The Erminettes were just a whim, we'll see if I keep them.
