The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

How are Dottie and Atlas this morning Cyn?

Dottie is good. Atlas, well, he hesitated coming down the ramp, acting like he was having trouble negotiating the steep slope, and a hen shoved her head under his bum and he was forced to fly off and land. He's limping, poor baby. I took them a big platter of a mix of eggs, oatmeal, grits, cayenne, turmeric, garlic, chili powder, vitamin E, olive oil and flax seed with some aspirin crushed into the mix (figured wouldn't hurt any of the six hens in there). Well, he wouldn't eat any of it. So, I'll have to pick him up and pop an aspirin into his beak to be sure he gets an anti-inflammatory in his system. Ida and Wynette have been picking a sore place on his comb right at his head, in the middle, just like they used to do to his daddy, Rex, just because they were stuck inside a couple of days. Evil, picking women. They're outside today in the sun.

Poor sweet man. He must not be feeling too sporty if he didn't eat that delicious breakfast! Just for future reference are you giving him a baby aspirin? I was just wondering what dosage you are giving him? I still have some liquid Metacam from one of our past injuries but when that is finished I will have to use aspirin since the last time I was at the vet's they would not sell me any Metacam to have on hand.

Well, usually, I give a bigger bird like a rooster or a huge Orp hen 2 baby aspirin the first go-round and one the next day then I stop for a few days and continue if it seems necessary. A less heavy hen will get one 81 mg. every time. But, in that mixture, I crushed three 326 mg regular aspirin and stirred it around so no way to know who got what. I figured Atlas would get some, but I don't think he touched it at all. He's better when I pick him up, but he protests more when Tom does. He's a big mama's boy. I admit, I take advantage of having to treat him to cuddle him and talk in his ear a little, tell him how good he is. He seems to enjoy that, or at least, he tolerates my attentions, LOL.

Dottie has gone back to her flock but only after I blunted Atlas's ice pick spurs in case he was too happy to see her and slipped. She also got a saddle on her to maybe protect her a little. She isn't having any trouble in there, not even from Big Ida, who only stared at her and growled for a little while, LOL.
