The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

this is great, you do all the work, and I get to watch

The coop is coming along quickly. The rain came down hard down my way today. Maybe we got what you normally get.

That chick's siblings here are fearless also, and very inquisitive. They are so cute. They also seem to be stuck together like glue.

I hate that I'm going to break up the trio. Ike, Jr. will be going to live in Tennessee, the little Dellie colored pullet will probably stay here and who knows about the BR chick? If it's a pullet, I'm betting you'll want it, right, Andrew? If it's another single barred male, I'll have to find a home for him, I suppose. You cannot beat their personalities, that's for sure, so maybe it won't be too hard to find him a good situation. Since I have Atlas and Rex and Deacon, in addition to Isaac, I really don't need to keep him, much as I love these guys.

Long day. Coop almost finished and ready for roosts and paint. Must get human and pop doors built as well as the vent covers-where are those darn hinges I had???

Take a gander at the "redneck insulation", aka plastic walmart bags, bubblewrap and painters plastic sheeting bunched up and stuffed between every stud. DH realized that the turtleback vent might be a predator weak point so we put hardware cloth on the underside with screws and washers and crossed with a little 1x1 piece of lumber. No raccoon is repelling into this coop!

"No raccoon is repelling into this coop!" Bahahaha!! I can just see a little frustrated raccoon dressed all in black like Tom Cruise from Mission Impossible!

Definitely want to avoid Tom Cruise getting into my chicken coop!

By the way, Andrew, I think the barred chick is a cockerel. Today, he got into the main pen and his Aunt Wynette was a bit hostile. When we rescued him, I noticed pink wattles. In fact, the one I thought was a pullet may also be a cockerel so I'd have to see if the same person who wants Ike, Jr. also would want another one.

That barred chick does look like a cockerel in those photos. This barred chick here is starting to take off as far as comb and wattle development. He is looking really good as far as his build, etc. The black put is up nicely also. I am ok without a barred pullet, it will just take longer to get to a double factor barred cockerel this way.
