I can't believe they would let a man like that live out his life.... It kinda goes to show how messed up our cou try is...
Well, the same regime is in power, his brother. They overthrew Batista, the people thinking they were getting a better government, but they just got more of the same, or worse. It amazes me how the Cuban people, some of them, live in their Communist system and defend it and seem hostile to Americans, while others who escaped understand what they now have and what they left. Some are hostile to rebels like my father who tried to fight the regime and was executed for his trouble. I think of how our own country began, with a bunch of rebels leaving an oppressive government. I hope we're not coming back around full circle again with that, though, but that's another discussion entirely.
Funny connection, though-when I was in 7th grade, a new boy came into our class mid-year. His father was a minister who escaped Cuba with his sons, not sure about the wife, though. This boy and I sort of had a crush on each other. I remember his name so well. Later, when I found out who my father was and the family story, I remembered that boy from 7th grade and want so much to have a conversation with him now about our Cuban connection that I found later in life. Back then, I really didn't understand much about all that, not at that young age.
And I just discovered
another link- my husband was taught Judo by a man who taught Batista's troups the skill in Cuba and was living here. Bizarre connections. Six degrees of Kevin Bacon, ack!
