The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

I agree about the injustice of a man like him living out a long and pampered old age. Sounds like things are finally changing for the folks that live there, maybe now that his toxic presence is gone it will get better.

But, the same family is still in power. I'm sure that he influenced Raul even when he wasn't on the "throne", so we'll see what happens now that his evil brother is finally gone for good. But that won't bring back all the men who died there nor my family's property.

Well, the same regime is in power, his brother. They overthrew Batista, the people thinking they were getting a better government, but they just got more of the same, or worse. It amazes me how the Cuban people, some of them, live in their Communist system and defend it and seem hostile to Americans, while others who escaped understand what they now have and what they left. Some are hostile to rebels like my father who tried to fight the regime and was executed for his trouble. I think of how our own country began, with a bunch of rebels leaving an oppressive government. I hope we're not coming back around full circle again with that, though, but that's another discussion entirely.

Funny connection, though-when I was in 7th grade, a new boy came into our class mid-year. His father was a minister who escaped Cuba with his sons, not sure about the wife, though. This boy and I sort of had a crush on each other. I remember his name so well. Later, when I found out who my father was and the family story, I remembered that boy from 7th grade and want so much to have a conversation with him now about our Cuban connection that I found later in life. Back then, I really didn't understand much about all that, not at that young age.

And I just discovered another link- my husband was taught Judo by a man who taught Batista's troups the skill in Cuba and was living here. Bizarre connections. Six degrees of Kevin Bacon, ack!

Back to birds, something is off with Athena. She has been laying regularly, skipping a day a week or so, but she has not produced an egg in the last week. That's not so concerning, except that she is acting off, too. She goes to roost and is fast asleep before 4:30 p.m., before any of the others. She is not bloated, not limping, nothing I can put my finger on, but she is just not acting herself. I think maybe she was hurt by one of the roosters-Hector isn't all that insistent and she doesn't seem to have trouble with Apollo, but the Brahma boys have developed a taste for the BR pullets and have been grabbing them a lot lately, necessitating rescue by their own guys. I hope she's okay since she's the only pullet I have out of ten of them that is laying. Zara still isn't laying, sheesh.

I hope Athena feels better soon!

Me, too. Hate to lose one of Apollo's two girls, even if they do seem to gravitate toward Hector more than Apollo anyway. I hate mysteries. She is so young and was laying just fine then suddenly, quit and acted as if she didn't feel well. Time will tell.

I wonder what is up with the poor girl? Hopefully she pulls through whatever it is and does just fine!
