The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Happy New Year :ya

I don't think it was Atlas; I sure hope not! I'd rather it be a crowing pullet. The big guy is a sweetie. I picked him up today and hugged him. Those evil wenches are picking at his comb because they're stuck inside and bored.

Hi speckledchicken,
Do you know anyone in California with heritage barred rock?

Happy New Year!
Hope everyone has a peaceful, healthy and productive 2017!

Well, of course! And you cannot ignore Georgie. She'll bite the fire out of you if you try. But, so will Wynette. As Ladyhawk says, love from Wynette and Georgie is painful!

Unfortunately, I don't, not offhand. Marvin Stukel himself is in Arizona, which is as close as I can get and I'm not sure what the situation is with him right now. They are almost as hard to find as true Delawares these days.

I was going to place an order with sandhill but I don't see that they have them. What other breeds have that gorgeous barring?

I don't know of any breed that has that really great, crisp barring. Mostly, they have more cuckoo-type barring. Maybe I'm having a senior moment, and someone else can tell you a breed that would come close, but I don't recall any that have that type of barring that the old-time Barred Rocks have.

Nothing that I see pictures of now compares to the drawings and pictures of the old-time BRs. However there are lots of beautiful barred breeds, and they are very pretty even if not as perfect as the old barred rocks.

Right now, most breeders won't ship eggs if they're up north. I know Jill isn't shipping right now, where Hector came from. It may be a couple of months down the road before you can find anyone that will actually ship eggs or chicks so you should have time to check them out. Someone sent me a PM saying he found someone in PA who had quality BRs, but I didn't recognize the name-it was tlmotzkus

The only pictures that I could find of her rocks were in an old classified ad here

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...-rocks-olive-eggers-and-super-blue-egg-layers

If you look at the little strip of photos in her ad and page to the right using the right arrow, then you can click on the photographs. One of the boys looks like a cockerel; there's some pretty nice barring on some of those birds.

I finally found those awhile ago. Still no idea if they are Good Shepherds or what. He/She didn't say in the ad. And no name in the profile. They look nice, but before the other member asked if I knew about those, I'd never heard the screen name; seems to be a newer member.

ETA: oh, it's a man named Tom. Saw where he typed his name on a post.

I uploaded a new video, which has Apollo and Hector on it, though the topic is not chickens, per se.
