The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Even if you get chicks from a breeder of fine quality BRs, some of those may not be up to par. Even two perfect parents, per standard, don't always produce perfection. But that perfect barring, the gravy boat chest, the nice head with a 5 pointer comb and that flowing tail on the rooster makes for some real eye candy!

So true, even the best parents can throw off-type and color offspring. That's why sellers of "show quality" eggs and chicks are not strictly truthful, as the chicks may not develop into show-quality at all. Really one of my pet peeves.

Mine, too, Mary. I keep telling folks, just did yesterday or day before that you cannot buy "show quality chicks". There is truly no such thing.

I had not mentioned it on this thread, but the week before Christmas I was in the hospital for 3 days. My lack of being able to breathe had gotten so bad, I went to the ER. I already knew they were going to check me in. When the x-ray tech said "oh my", I told her that didn't sound good, and asked what was going on. She said the pleural space in my lungs was filled with liquid. They checked me in, and the next morning did a thoracentiesis, meaning they put a needle through my back into the pleural space in the lung, and took out 1.5 liters of fluid. NOT fun!

I still had at least that much left in there, but they could not safely remove anymore at one time, than they did. After a couple days, the doctors released me, since I seemed to be doing fine, could take the same medications at home, it was the holidays, and it was going to take time for the results of the cultures, and some of the test results to get back in. My lung specialist (yes, I finally got into a decent one) told me to make a follow up appointment after the holidays.

My lung specialist went on vacation, and didn't get back in town until today. My appointment is on the 6th. I already know the lung has filled back up with fluid. I hope they have the results, so we can better figure out how to deal with this, and that it can all be done on an outpatient basis. I HATE being in the hospital.

I'm so sorry you've had such a sucky time lately. Yuck, does not sound fun at all. Hopefully, it will be resolved without a hospital stay.

So sorry to hear that! That's terrible you were sick over the holidays. I hope you feel better as soon as possible and your new doctor works out.

Someone is clucking. Maretta, my 6 yr old Ameraucana x EE hen is clucking. She has raised chicks two or three times in the past, been an excellent mom. Last time, she clucked for a month and never began sitting. That was probably two years ago when she was with Isaac. So, I guess since she chose to move in with little munchkin rooster, Xander, she wants to be a mom again. Interesting how that happened. She chose, on her own, to be with a rooster again, and a few weeks later, is going broody. She pretty much took over in that group, moved ahead of both Wendy and Rowena in rank and when Dusty is gone, she will be head hen, I have no doubt. Last time I had a broody was when Ida and Wynette raised chicks, back when Ida raised Apollo and Zara and Wynette raised Athena and her brothers.

Found these pics from 2013 when she raised her second batch:

She rejected those at 10 weeks old.
