The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

It is a busy day indeed for you. You are already hatching? We are still frozen here. Since I like raising chicks when it's warmer outside I wait until May an June.

Since we switched our talk to Orpingtons on the Cochin thread I though I would come over here to ask if you had shared pictures of Suede. I am a big Orpington fan even though the roosters always get frostbite. I do recall you talking about him, and I think I saw pictures of him somewhere. He lived a pretty long live for a big boy.
oh, yeah, lots of pictures of Suede here over the years. He was hatched here the year after I started my original flock. His favorite hen, Meg, came from the same breeder who had her RIR rooster in with some big old Buff Orp hens. Meg took care of him in his later years, lay beside him or watched over him as he slept on the ground. She was dedicated. She lived to be 7 1/2 yrs old with little Xander as her rooster the rest of her life.

My boy. He was about 14 lb in his prime.
Big red hen, Meg, grooming him until he cried, "Uncle!"

And the stunning beadwork creation Ladyhawk did for me:

Wow, I got a thing for big fluffy animals and little fluffy animals, so cochins and Orpingtons are my favorite breeds. He was quite a gorgeous boy. Meg was a good looking hen too, nice cross. Such nice birds you always have, makes mine look like a gang of street urchins.

I am fascinated by the beaded chicken, that is quite a wonderful piece of art. I don't think I would have the patience to do something like that, it must have taken a long time to create. I do also enjoy your quilts. I personally get very angry during any sewing, so I admire that you can do them.

He's a gorgeous rooster.
Thanks, he sure was. He was a sweetheart, too. Not a mean bone in his body. Good thing at that size!

I know I couldn't do it. She does ceremonial regalia, mocassins, etc. But this was a real masterpiece, at least to me. It took her a long time and she had to order just the right shade of blue beads. I think she moved cross country in the middle of making it. And she still had not sent it when we had the house fire, thank God! It took her a long time to cut the hide in prep for beading the edge of it. After all that work, she was afraid to put any cutting tool to that hide.

OMG that beading is fabulous
I wish you could touch it. It is raised up off the hide with layer upon layer. I clean it off by using canned air. That's my boy. She loved him so much. He's the reason she got her blue Orp, Lancelot. The first time she visited, he sat in her lap eating blueberry muffins. We had it all over both of us, LOL. Good memories.

Cyn sorry to hear of all your troubles! :hugs

Suede sure was handsome! Yesterday I got a trio of Orps... They are in quarantine right now but here is a pic of the rooster. He placed 2nd in a big class of Orps at MNs biggest poultry show. What do ya think about him Cyn?

Their color is lovely.

BTW, what happened with the cow?

Thank you!

It ended up dying so the head was brought to the NDSUs lab and they tested for rabies and that wasn't it so they sent it to the Minnesota state lab and they ran a lot of tests and everything came back negative so we just have to watch the others. We think she went blind because when she ran away she ran into a tree. I wonder if she just felt cornered or like she was being stalked and just ran for the hills lol. Cuz she couldn't see worth a darn and kept running into stuff on her way out and we think when she ran into the tree she got some major brain damage but who knows. All we can do is guess...
