The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Hi Cyn, this is my first time posting on this thread. I somehow stumbled across it 3-4 weeks ago and just now finished reading it all. It's been like reading a good book, full of ups and downs. I've enjoyed reading about Atlas and his progeny and your life. And all the cute fluffy butt chick pics, I show them to my little toddler when he's sitting with me while I read and he loves it.

I'm so sorry you lost adorable Pooh and little Carly this week. The loss of a dear pet is always hard. We had to put down my favorite cat a few months ago because of cancer and her sister has not been the same, lost weight and wanting more attention than she used to.

I'm a new chicken owner as of 9 weeks ago and am already so attached to my girls and have them all named. We got 13 chicks, anticipating that we'd get a few cockerels to rehome (not allowed here, though this thread has made me wish I could have one), but they all ended up pullets. Which means I have to choose a few of my girls to find homes for because we are only allowed 10 plus don't have a coop big enough for 13. It's going to be hard to choose which girls to give up. Didn't think it would be hard when we first got them, before I got attached lol.

Well, thank you for stopping in and sticking with the thread. It's been going for about three years now, since Atlas was a little tyke so lots of posts to read!

You will be amazed at how much you love those girls. They are endlessly fascinating and much more complicated than many give them credit for. Enjoy them!

I already have a favorite, my Martha, she comes up to me as soon as I go out in the run. Hops in my lap or if I lean over she jumps on my shoulder.

Now to get caught up on Hector's thread. :)

Awww!

Hi KitKat, welcome

They are little red shoulder hawks. So darling, but they eat like pythons! Glad they went to rehab before they ate me out of house and home.

Oh, my! I knew they were raptors, for sure. Those beaks really are telling.

I worked some more on my sidewalk project today. Someone is possibly coming tomorrow to get a cockerel and pullet as a breeding pair. I'm sure he'll not be thrilled with the small pullet, but I'm keeping the Stukel pullet and Jill's larger one for Hector.

There is something about a line of pavers that I enjoy looking at, the rest is frosting on the cake.

I have a question, have you ever seen a young chick try to mate with younger chicks? I am trying to add my 3 barnevelder chicks, a little over a week to my other batch, about 3 weeks but I have one that was pecking them excessively on the head, that I swear fake mated the ground while holding the chicks head. Needless to say I will keep my barnevelder separately for now. The older chick in question could be one of my roosters but is too young to be definite, but it does have thick legs. I haven't observed something like that before at that age.

Speckled, your place is really looking nice. Especially the garden. I LOVE butternut squash! Glad you got volunteers.

Just to let you know, I cry like a baby on processing day, or when I have to cull. I hope I will always be that way, having respect for life. I never want to be so callous that taking a life doesn't bother me. While it may upset me, there are times that culling an animal is the most humane thing to do. Our animals trust us with their lives, and well being, but they trust us to deal with their overabundant, prolonged suffering too. It still hurts though. My heart goes out to you both.

On a positive note, I'm in lockdown, already have an external pip, and plenty of the eggs are rocking.
