The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

My chickens have been soooo bored. Nothing but thunder , lightning , and rain. Pop up storms. My weeds are higher than my flowers.

Cynthia how are your chickens doing? I'm down to 25 right now. How is Gypsy?

Chickens are good. Perpetually broody Brandy is making me nuts (my broody-every-quarter Brahma). Gypsy is still doing great! She will be 11 in November if she makes it. My BR hen, Amanda, is 11 yrs 4 mos old and she laid 4 eggs this month. Amazing hen. So many ancient girls here now.

The instructions on those pills say to dose once each month. If you raise chickens for eggs, you'd never be able to eat the eggs, plus it cannot be good to flood their system with chemicals every month. Seems that when you do that, they lose their effectiveness anyway. I don't worm all that often myself, and usually when I see worms in someone's poop. I just wormed the Brahmas with Safeguard this time. Last time was Valbazen which is my usual wormer. They seem to get worms more than the others for some reason I can't understand. Maybe whatever they eat has worm eggs in it, who knows?

Update on the house hunt. I am having serious trouble with it. Prices are so high in our area that what I want to pay will get me a tiny, very old house or even just a trailer on small acreage, not what I want at all. I found this one, which overall, I do like, but it has a whirlpool tub in each bedroom...I mean in the actual bedroom, plus a bathroom in each bedroom. Those tubs take up a lot of floor space in there! It is stepless and has a nice view, is gated with privacy. But, those tubs, good grief, whose idea was that?! Seems like a good vacation rental, but not necessarily a permanent home since you lose so much bedroom space. Not the mention, you have to go through a bedroom to get to the bathrooms, rather like we have here with the bathroom being a Jack 'n Jill situation between our two bedrooms.A house with what we need/want would be well over 200K.

This house is pretty much perfect as far as low maintenance goes. Has raised bed gardens, gated and paved driveway, large house in perfect condition 3/2, outbuilding, gorgeous landscaping already in place. The lot is only 1 acre, but no subdivision. It's on a very, very long main road, though not one heavily traveled. The price for what it is is pretty good, though more than I wanted to pay. Two issues: kitchen is rather small, but has gas stove, which we love. And it's in Murphy, NC, and a more remote part of it, which we are very familiar with, but really do not want to live there, though we are only 8/10 of a mi from the NC line. If I could find this in our county or the next GA county over, I'd be a happy camper, I tell you. This is all I could hope for as far as something Tom could handle with his health issues.

Have you gone to see it? Keep an open mind about it. I think once you start living in, and using the place, you'll get used to it quickly, and actually like it. That jacuzzi bathtub is actually in a very good location. Tom will probably love it. My mother had rheumatoid arthritis, and had one. Before she got hers, there were times she was flat on her back, and in bad pain. After she got hers, she could go in there, let it do it's thing, and get enough relief she was never flat on her back again. With it in the bedroom, if Tom's using it, you can still get into the bathroom, and visa versa. It's easy to get dressed when you get out, since your clothes are all right there in the bedroom with you. The one in the guest bedroom could be sold, and you could reclaim the space if needed. When you get guests, which isn't that often, they can go use their own bathroom, and yours remains private. Yes, it's different than what you're used to, but like I said, I think once you live there, you'll actually like it.

To give an example of a very pleasant surprise, years ago, I bought a home in KY. The master bedroom was decent size, but not overly big. There was no closet in it. Next you walked through what looked like it had been the original walk in closet. There was the toilet, on one side, and a small stand sink on the other side. In the center of that was a door. It opened to a huge master bath. In the mater bathroom, there was a jacuzzi tub, a shower, a long counter with the sink in it and loads of drawers, and cabinet space underneath, but the biggest shock was that there was a huge walk in closet with a lot of hanger space, but along both ends were rows of nice drawers. Instead needing a lot of dresser drawer space to put clothes in, it was all built into the huge closet. You could hang lots of clothes, put lots of shoes, and the drawers held more than the typical double dresser, and chest of drawers combined. Why in the world would anyone want to do that? It was ridiculous.

The first time I went to take a shower, and experienced the difference, it was fantastic. I stepped out of the shower, and everything was right there for me. I know it doesn't sound like much, but the experience was impressive. Sometimes that's how it goes. Things that don't really look, or sound so impressive, when experienced, are really very good.

The problem is that if you take one out--and remember, there is one in each bedroom-you have plumbing coming through the floor. You'd have to repair the subfloor and replace the flooring in that room. Tom didn't like it, he said. He liked the mural of the waterfall, typical artist's reaction, LOL.

I'd only take out the one in the guest bedroom, and only if you needed more room in there. Yes, the plumbing comes through the sub-floor, but it should still be a fairly easy fix. Again, that's me, not you. I do know how great those tubs are though, for things like Tom's back, and to relieve achy, creaky joints, and muscles.

I would take this place. That bedroom is huge, and a walk in closet? I can walk in mine, but barely. :thumbsup
