The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Love the little rooster 'tude

How's the goober doing since you decreased his harem?

Deacon is doing better, thanks for asking. Neither Rita nor Serena pick on Sammie Jo and she doesn't fight with them, either, no fighting at all. And I now remember to make sure Deacon has more of the grain mix he was used to eating when he lived by himself. He seems okay now. I was out slathering up the roosters' combs tonight in prep for a stretch of super cold weather and he got the treatment. He's such a sweetie, that one.

What do you use to prevent frostbite? I used vaseoline in the past, but came across some leftover lanolin from nursing. I have not used it on the chickens yet, but I figured that would be a nice more natural option. What do you think?

I love to see old black and white photos. My mom had shoeboxes filled with them but, didn't ID them. Probably wouldn't have helped. My father wrote "Marsha," my cousin's name on MY 'sitting on a pony' Picture.

I mixed up some vaseline, olive oil and some A&D ointment this time.

I love the green, and lavender quilt. I'm partial to lavender though. Speckeled, glad your flock is doing so well. Your mixture for the combs sounds good. I like using the A&D too. Hope you all don't lose power, and stay warm enough.

Thank you. If we just keep power on, we'll all be fine, I think. Aimee, one of my older Belgian D'Anver hens has gone broody. I may give her eggs since she can't go outside for a few days anyway. Maretta, my 1/2 BW Ameraucana EE hen, has been broody for over a week, but she lives with Isaac and I have nowhere to house her in this cold weather other than maybe Zane's old cage above where Rachel and her babies are. I hate to do that in case I need that cage for an ailing bird.

My DH has to travel from here to Knoxville very early in the a.m. to take my son to the airport on the coldest morning of the season. And it's snowing right now, too. He has to travel along the Ocoee river to get there, a windy, slippery affair in winter weather. It will be a test of the AWD SUV, I suppose. He's taking his old military subzero parka, an afghan and disposable hand warmers in case something happens and he is stuck in traffic or whatever. I'll be scared for them until he calls me to let me know they got there. It's normally about a 2 hr drive, but I fear it will add at least an hour with the road conditions. Chris has to go back because his new teaching job starts on Monday. But, flights could be delayed, something no one can do anything about.

I'm so sorry! Which is Ethel? The turkey? or one of the hens? Sorry if I haven't kept up. I had a dear Aunt Ethel and I have yet to name one of my hens after her, but I plan to do that one day. I'll remember your girl when I do. Again, so sorry to hear that.

Yep both turkeys. Thanks Ethel and Edith are great names and I love them.

Owls are stealthy predators, for sure, but they are mostly nocturnal. Where did it get your turkey? I know that sometimes, they'll hunt at dusk or slightly before if it's very overcast and dark like it often is in winter. Did you see it or just deduce it was an owl from the evidence?
