The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Geepers he looks as tired as I get.LOL How big is your new coop? Will we ever stop building? I want so bad to make a wire bottomed one just for broodies after this Springs All Out settings. I think every hen went broody at least once and some twice.

I want it raised with wire for floor and a shelf lower down to easily clean it off. Dream on or maybe this fall acc. to how I feel when it cools off. After a diabetic change in med. I am feeling like myself again. I hope it last a longgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg time. LOL

This is a small one, only 4 x 8 but it's really not another coop, just one that will be a substitute and will help a long term transition take place-- the 12 year old building behind it that houses Atlas and Suede's hens eventually will be torn down. The foundation sank and the entire building twisted and it wasn't built as a coop so I don't feel it's as safe as the others are, generally.

Poor Amanda is so scared of Atlas now. I had her in that pen next to where we were building and though Atlas couldn't get to her, she was extremely nervous and couldn't rest so she had to go back to Zane's cage in the Orp coop.

IF IT WOULD JUST QUIT RAINING, we could get this project done faster. I feel like I've been living in Florida all summer. If I wanted to live in the flatlands, I would, for goodness sake.

Live in Florida nodda. I just left the coast of NC. Rain, 90 plus degrees and syrup to breath. I love my mtns.

His poor back was screaming after today. Well, it wasn't doing so well yesterday, loading the lumber on the truck with me, then offloading it when we got home. Mine was a little sore, too, but he's a disabled vet and has degenerative disc disease so mine recovers fairly quickly and his just goes from normal daily hurting to extreme hurting. At least I'm pretty strong and together, we get things done.

SSSShhh don't wake him up, they get awful crabby if they don't have their nap.
Ain't it the truth?

We built the front and back walls today, except for placing the front window in it. They are just toenailed in, not leveled yet, another rain session coming in to stop us. There will be a window in the front and side wall, stationary ones, with vents over them for air. We used sashes for a window the contractors removed from our kitchen after the fire and made the two windows for the little coop. Not sure about how much more ventilation I'll put in since the back wall will have full sun in summertime, but the front vent will go all the way across the front and be 6" wide. Still thinking about adding a second one on the front and tweaking the plans.

Wow, I really admire people that work with their hands - can watch them labor for weeks. What a great result though. I would go with the extra windows - I think chickens really enjoy looking out, and if it helps with ventilation it's an extra bonus.
