The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

You know, people never seize to amaze me anymore. I had 9 packing peanut cockerels that I raised to 12 weeks last year. They were leghorns. Pretty, but crazy. I listed them on craigslist and FB chicken swap. I had interest in one as a pet/alarm clock to replace his old red roo that had passed. He chose the cockerel with bent toes. I still see pics of him now and then and hear that his owner adores him. The other 8 were set up to go to a young man (I'm thinking 12 year old) "for his pens." Well, I'm not clueless, but I was to the point that they need to go, cut my losses and be done. He set things up to meet BEFORE a chicken swap he was attending. I have no doubt most or all were sold for a profit at the swap. I discounted them since he was taking them all. I set it up to my advantage to meet at a grocery store near me. That morning he asks if we can meet at the swap. No. Way. That is 30 minutes farther for me to basically give him these birds. And I don't do swaps. I get the shivers just thinking about having to go to the feed store after there has been a swap. He then tried to knock me down a dollar per cockerel that morning as well. If he would have been an adult I would have stopped right there and let the leghorns continue to roost in the pine tree. I chalked it up to him maybe being immature, but wow. Etiquette, people.

Sorry people are giving you such a hard time. You know I would take all 5 in a heartbeat if we lived closer!!

I hope all is well with your husband. We spent the night in the ER last weekend with my 4 year old. Not a fun place.

I've had folks ask me to drive to another state to bring free birds to them. Good grief, people, really?

I know you'd take them if you could see them. They are getting so friendly, especially the largest male. He runs up to me and lets me scoop him up and love on him. He's going to be a great rooster and dang it, someone better buy them before I fall completely in love!

Oh my goodness, that sounds so wonderful! A kind watchful rooster is just what I need! Mean Willie Roo the hawk deterrent extraordinaire, seems to only attack me when I am wearing red, which is often since my rain/chore jacket is what I wear at the coop. EE Cielo is just a pretty boy who only cares about himself. No sharing with the girls. My only hope right now is Blackbeard, EE mix and son of Willie. He warns of hawks, never offered to challenge me, and lets me carry him with no complaints each night back to the broody coop. He also goes out of his way to carry treats across the property to the girls if they do no come when he is excitedly calling and jumping around.

I keep warning DH that next time we visit GA when I have a broody at home… I might need to take a detour! We have plans to head to Gainsville and south of Atlanta in May and probably again toward the end of summer.

Awwwww.....I can just see that chunky monkey running up to you to get him some lovin'.

Hope you and Tom are feeling better!

What! Torn open leg? Did I miss something?

I had a very nice guy come to see an old snowmobile we had for sale (Jimmy said Maybe We should Sell It and I had it on craigslist 5 minutes later). He checked it out, fidgited for a minute, then asked if i would take $75 less. I just smiled and said No. He said, It's really worth what you are asking for it, but I had to ask. I said, I understand -and I do, he would not have been happy with it if he had not tried to deal a little.

Yes, you must have missed it. Sunday a.m. after a night of rain, DH slipped on the ramp going to Deacon's coop, which has green mildew growing in it from the super wet winter we've had. Of course, he probably hit the edge where it levels off and tore his skin on his shin open, quite a few layers down like a wrinkled curtain, and I do mean, it was nasty. Considering he might need stitches and the nasties he probably shoved into the wound from that ramp (free ranging birds leave poop, of course), we went to the ER. They cleaned it out but did not close it because it's right on the bone and the skin was too tight to do that, so he got a tetanus shot, antibiotic ointment I've never heard of and oral Cipro, plus has to change the dressing twice a day. And he's twisted and sore from the fall. I want to tear down that darn building anyway-the ramps were for lawn equipment, built pre-chicken days. They're always slippery in wet weather. Can't put non skid stuff on them because of the chickens tendency toward bumblefoot.

Wanted to clarify that it's not folks calling on the ad and then asking if, oh, by the way, do you happen to have any laying hens or point of lay pullets you'd part with? It's folks acting like they called on an ad for laying hens, as if they'd never read the ad at all (nor the follow up posts I made to try to make it even more plain) in the first place. Boggles the mind.

Hope Tom's leg gets well soon. Don't you love people who read what they want to into an ad! Any D'Anver chicks yet? You know I'm dying to come back and visit your farm! I wish we could have bought your land you had for sell, but I have to stay near my little mama.
Take care!

Aimee hatched two little D'Anvers, one feather legged, one properly clean legged. Not sure on the sex yet. Those little ones will keep us guessing for another couple of weeks at least. They are adorable, of course. They've been outside twice now with Aimee, it's been so warm.

None of the D'Anvers is laying except Carly at the moment so no one is able to get eggs right now, not unless they want all from one hen and only 5-6 at a time, unfortunately. I told Penny she had to lay something, sometime. She can't just be a pocket pet forever.
