The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

LOL. You think she might be dyslexic ?
I think she sees what she wants to see, lol.

I think she dances to the beat of a different drummer. She is an original , not a copy of anything. Good for Lucy.
This, yup. She certainly has some unworldly tune playing in her head. She expects me to hand feed her scratch. I can throw it and they'll all jump off the outside bar, except Lucy. She paces back and forth, looking at me. Sometimes, she just forgoes her treat entirely rather than eat like a chicken. Sometimes, she begrudgingly jumps down when all the tidbits are about gone. Silly hen, but she is my Lucy Goosey. I couldn't bear to part with her. Aubrey tried to buy her off me for some breeding project because she has 1/2 height legs (what breed bantam has stumpy legs? Can't recall, maybe Ohiki?) but I said, "Part with Wrong Way Lucy?? Perish the thought!". Ladyhawk carries her around like a shoulder bag and tries to get me to part with her every time she comes to visit. Nope, not even for my BFF.

On a sadder note, my older son had to euthanize his 14 year old Husky today. He's completely torn apart. After he and his wife lost their only child early in her pregnancy, that dog gave him comfort, but it was time. He had cancer, was completely deaf and in pain. Still, the right thing is rarely the easy thing.

Then just a little while ago, he posted this, which broke my heart even more:

I understand, been there more than once with dogs and many, many times with birds I loved.

Losing a child or a beloved pet-it just never ever gets easier. So sorry about the dog.

Thanks, Karen. He was the only grandchild I'll ever have though I didn't see him much. He sure was a loved dog.

Time will help them remember their friendship without the burden of sorrow.
Yes, it will. It's just the first time he's had to shoulder the entire responsibility for this. That is so hard.

Atlas kids! They are over two weeks old now. As long as I did not mistake one of the black hens' eggs for a BR hen's egg, then I think the one with the larger head spot is a pullet and the one with the smallest head spot (at first glance, you don't see the teensy bit of "frosting") is a cockerel-that one also has the clearest legs, was slowest to feather and has the sharpest barring of the three BR chicks.

As mentioned before, the solid black pullet belongs to Deacon and Sammie Jo so a cousin, not a sibling.

Pullet?

Both pullets in the front.

Facing camera, the cockerel-note that arch in the comb, too.

Same chick from behind.

So sorry about the passing of your son's beloved dog. Bless his heart, those comments he posted were heartbreaking. Valek was very fortunate to have lived such a long life filled with so much love.

On a happier note, thanks for new Atlas/Deacon babies pics. I am just so amazed at healthy and robust they are. Those sturdy little legs make me smile every time.

The poor old dog was more than ready to go, but Michael wasn't ready until the other day. It takes us longer to accept that they are just alive because their sweet old hearts keep beating.

The chicks are cute little hoodlums, for sure! They're out dustbathing under a wicker rocking chair with Maretta right now. Deacon and Sammie Jo's other kid is in this photo, the Delaware looking chick, probably a cockerel.
