The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

I wish people understood the difference between birds and good birds
Not holding my breath. Most have no idea there is a difference. Some folks think all chicks hatch out yellow. It's insane.

When I asked the last person if she had a quarantine place for the pair so they weren't just thrown in with her other 14 immediately, she sounded (I know, can't hear inflection on the web) a bit put off, said she'd been around animals her whole life, raised on a farm, so yes she did. I told her, wonderful, there were so many levels of experience, I had to ask. What I didn't say was there are old farmers who still have no idea about quarantine, never heard of such a thing. You can raise chickens for 20 years and still be clueless about disease and disease prevention and be surprised by pecking order issues.

I'm sure I'll be told it's none of my business what their setup looks like. Well, yes, it is if you want my chicks. It is my business if you throw them out in the backyard, expect them to roost in the trees and they're killed the first night by raccoons. If you are that defensive, you can get chickens elsewhere.

and I'll just add

I thought I became a germ-o-phobe after having children…. it is 10x worse with the chickens!!

I'm a reader, and I like to be fully informed before doing anything. Not a fan of surprises. Diseases were the first thing I read about before getting chickens. We're now looking into bees next year. I thought chickens were intimidating!! Chickens are EASY!

About being a reader--- this goes for feed bag tags as well. I recently had to pick up some calf starter for our calf. Our local feed store was recently bought out and they added Ace hardware in there as well. Kinda nice not to go all the way into town for building supplies. Needless to say, the area that housed all the feed was taken over by hardware and paint. They now keep the bags in back, which is no problem, I let them load for me anyhow. But, if I am buying something new, they have to take me back there and wait with me while I read the tags. Kinda sad, really. More frustrating that they did not have nor intend to have pasture seed in stock this spring. We had to special order it. What?!?

Our alternative is Tractor Supply, no thanks.

I hope LH doesn't mind. She had an experience with a roaming dog last night while her part Delaware rooster, Ragnar, was out with his hens late in the day. Ragnar was hatched her and she took him back with her, the great grandson of Isaac. I get confused with his lineagem he has so many breeds in him. He is the son of Gabriel and Gloria Jean(splash Rock). Gabriel is the son of Rex and Rita (BLRW x Blue Ameraucana). Rex is Isaac's son with one of the Stukel hens. So, that boy is mixed up! But he looks like a Columbian Rock. LOL.
Anyway, here is the story, quoted from her FB account of it:

Quote: He is the one she goes into the coop and hugs when she doesn't feel well. That is the sweetest rooster, just like Isaac.

I agree with you here, Michelle. They can't keep feed that isn't moldy. I only buy heat lamp bulbs there and really don't want to do that. They don't offer a military discount.

Wasn't going to post again, but tonight, I decided to candle the Brahmas since we're into Day 14 this evening. There are 4 quitters at different stages since the first candling. Funny thing is they are all Darks. So, I have 15 left going well, as far as I can see, 9 Partridge, 6 Dark. I'd already removed one PT and one Dk at first candling, if you recall, so only one partridge was removed and five Darks. I think his Darks are younger, but not sure (this is brahmapapa in NY). Would be funny if I got a Dirty Dozen from the Brahmas, too.

The Dirty Dozen went out in the pen for the first time today. They went wild. One caught a tiny cricket, another ate a big ant. Then, I had to shove them back through the pop door two at a time and keep putting them back when I turned to get others. It was a Keystone Cops moment, LOL.

No one has claimed the 10 week old pair or even the trio with Athena. They are so sweet, especially Athena's little sister. Someone is missing out on these. That male will have a beautiful head like his dad. And he's very round, too. If I didn't have these others coming up, I'd just keep him, though his barring is not as sharp/defined as a couple of his older brothers' was.

Havent been able to post for awhile so theres lots to catch up on!!!

Those babies loook so sweet! Hopefully the Brahmas are just like them!

Ragnar is quite the rooster! He should get a medal

My littles went out into the little coop yesterday. after the initial panic attack they realized how fun it was too run around in the shavings and Woohoo! The game was on. I sat in there with them until they figured out the new feeder and waterer. Made me want to go out there and sit every day, they were so funny.

Yes, she is so in love with that rooster. He is named for some Viking on a show she watches. But he is so much like Isaac in temperament, just a lovebug, but he can pull up "ruthless Viking" when he needs to, apparently.

They have a blast, don't they? It was like they were let out of prison after the first shock of being in a strange place. Mine went out yesterday and they saw Finn come to the fence. All the little ones alarmed and pulled to their full height to watch. But, Finn knows they are off limits, he really seems to (though, there is no broody monster to kick his butt this time) and he just lay down near to watch. Two of them decided to dust bathe. Not much cuter than a one week old chick getting its clean on!

Yes, shavings were flying everywhere! How do they know how to do that?? Lots of stuff packed into those little eggs.

Evidence of the instincts they come out of that egg with. I prefer they have a mama to teach them, but they seem to know so much innately anyway. I still don't have an exact male/female count, but it seems fairly even. I just wish I could freeze them in place for two minutes so try to assess them better, LOL.
