The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

It sounds like she has suffered damage to her brain, unfortunately recovery seems unlikely, but she could linger like this for a long time if you continue to provide nutritional support. Under normal circumstances she would likely quickly pass on from thirst, but it may be more humane to put her down rather than let her continue to just survive. Most animals, including people, when they die naturally, slowly become less interested in food and gradually just fall asleep and pass on. I don't think that is going to happen with her.

Exactly what I said to Tom, that I'm sure she has brain damage; how could she not with seizure after seizure in addition to whatever the initial event was? Thank you, Mary. The way she flips over in one of the big seizures, she'd probably eventually just snap her own neck. I never thought she'd survive this long after that first day, especially a tiny slip of a hen like Carly, but she was still interested in food so I thought if there was a chance she'd recover, as my Meg did three different times, I would try for a few days, but it's becoming apparent that we can't let her continue in this state and that she will not get better. Thank you for your input. It's like I know, but then I second guess myself and I need someone else to tell me what I really did pretty much know in my heart of hearts.

Sorry about Pooh.
Thank you. It's odd that she's gone, but we knew it was coming. This is why I'd rather try to avoid this gene if possible. I know that by keeping what I think is Dru's daughter sired by Atlas, it may still be here, but I so wanted a chick out of Druscilla.

Sorry that it has to be done, she has had a great life with you guys.

Thank you, Mary. She's gone. I volunteered to do it, but Tom said, no, he would. I know it hurts him badly every time and he adored Carly. It's hard to watch him with tears streaming down his face while his little girl dies. But, we did it for her, not to her. She was not living, not like that.

Thanks for your support. It is extra hard on my husband. I know it was the right thing to do, but all he feels is that he's killing an animal who trusts him, though he knew she was not going to recover and would starve without our daily intervention.

Now, I just have Rowena to worry about. This morning, crazy Tiny got into a frakus (sp?) with Gypsy and Panda. I mean, flared hackles, feet flying. I had to break it up. She's really lost her mind if she wants to fight anyone in that pen-no one likes her. Gypsy kept stalking her afterward, thunking her in the head, LOL.

On a brighter note, the garden is coming along and already, we have to pick the Contender beans. The Greasy Shortcut beans are growing up the back fence nicely. Have to keep the bindweed from joining in with it. And I found that the volunteer plant in the compost pile is a BUTTERNUT SQUASH! It has little ones all over it, very convenient since I did not plant any this year! See how big it is?

Yay butternut squash, I love volunteers. Your garden is looking spectacular. It is never easy to cull for me either. Was Tiny a part of the group's that lost someone?
No, Tiny is with the oldest of the old here. The group has a 10 yr old Amanda, who is crippled, 9 yr old Snow, who is also crippled, almost 10 yr old Gypsy, 9 yr old Panda and Emily, my black Rock who hatched the same time as Tiny and they are both 7 yrs old. Emily is there because of a bum leg from tendon damage and Tiny is there because, well, she's "special". As I told someone today, the Chicken Asylum on the Hill must have one resident lunatic and she's it.

It is emotionally draining to take a life that way, no matter what the reason. I would say her trust was well-placed.
Thank you, Mary, yes, it is so hard every single time, no matter how necessary. And thank you for the compliment.

Thought you guys would like to see the hatchlings I had here for a few days
Are those eaglets??
