The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Nice to hear! Are those Hybrid rocks? Because I know blacks aren't a true breed

:hmmWhat do you mean? That is not true. Never heard anyone make that statement. They are pure. No, they are not hybrids. Blue Rocks were introduced into the Standard of Perfection in the 1920's. When you breed two blues, you get blue, black and splash chicks, naturally.

Blue is genetically black with the addition of a blue gene. A splash is genetically black with the addition of TWO blue genes. So black IS the true color. Someone is confusing you. They are definitely not hybrids.

Did you even read that? That is not a black PLYMOUTH Rock, that is a created hybrid layer that are calling "Black Rock", not black PLYMOUTH ROCK. That is a trade name of a created hybrid layer, not a breed.

Do you see the color on that chicken in the photo? My black Ply. Rock hen has zero color other than black. You do realize that when you breed blues, you naturally get black chickens, right? I've raised BBS Ameraucanas, BBS Rocks and BBS Orpingtons, none hybrids.

The hen pictured on that web page you gave me is a black sex link hen. Their brand is called "black rock", but it is not the same as a pure Barred Plymouth Rock in the black color. I agree that their name is confusing, but the photo shows a black sex link hen with the typical coloring plus they say it's a RIR/BR cross, which is most definitely a BSL.

My black Plymouth Rock hen, Emily, whose sire was a Blue Plymouth Rock. She's in the back, middle.

No problem. I can see how you were confused, looking at that article. But, black is just a natural result of breeding blue chickens together since blue is created when one blue gene is added to the genetics of a black bird.

Fun those little barred babies are too cute! Even though they are in their awkward stage!

That blue Rock is stunning! How come you decided to breed the barred instead of BBS?

I had better quality Barreds than blues. The blue line carries a side sprig gene. Emily has an actual sprig and Gloria Jean apparently carries it because one of her sons had a side sprig I also think that the type on the Rocks is too Orp-like, overall, too fluffy as well. I love those girls, but the Barreds were the better birds. And I loved my original barred girls, Lexie and Ivy.
