The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

I agree and I'm glad I've been drinking well water for over 15 years now. We have good tasting water, not much iron or other nasty stuff, just have a sediment filter on it to save the water heater and fixtures. It isn't hard water, doesn't stain faucets and such. Working on storing it for hard times. Electric goes out, well pump goes out.
This is probably why my husband's teeth are better than mine. He grew up on well water (which is delicious, I love drinking water at the inlaws lol) and I grew up on city water.

Our well water stinks, literally, it's full of iron. We run it through a bunch of filters, and a softener, and reverse osmosis for drinking. You are lucky.
Yes, I feel that we are. Others not far from here had a lot of iron. Our well is about 400' deep but always fresh-tasting water.

Ugh I both love and hate the dentist. I love having my teeth all clean (and a few hours break from the kids lol) but I also have bad teeth. I've had so many fillings. I need crowns on my front 4 top teeth but my insurance won't cover it because they consider it "cosmetic " despite the fact that those teeth are basically all fillings now and need crowns before they fall apart. So I've been putting that off until it becomes absolutely necessary. I almost always have cavities, though the last few times I've had no cavities, just a few spots to keep an eye on, but I had to get one crown for a tooth with an old filling that was cracking the tooth. Our insurance only covers $1500/year per person, which I use up every year.

Yay for the pair finding a home!

We bought Humana C-550 plan, very affordable and covers a decent amount. That 4 tooth bridge that I'm going to have to get? Without insurance, it would be $6200. With our plan, it will be only $2100. I can live with that.

The county water at our last house was gross. We had a filter on the fridge for the ice or it would taste awful. This water is so good, I would be scared to leave for that alone.

I was raised with well water, and I didn't even use fluoride toothpaste until I was around 6 or 7. I had 3 cavities, which they filled, and that was it. I went to the dentist yearly for my cleanings, until I was 45, then went twice a year for cleanings. I think they replaced my fillings twice in my lifetime. The problems I'm having now, are not due to lack of proper care.

The first time I went through chemo, I went to the dentist just prior to treatment, and made sure my mouth was in tip top shape. My dentist warned that sooner, or later I would most likely have issues. It affected my salivary glands, so I don't produce enough saliva. This time, I went and got everything done, but the dentist warned me again, that I would have more issues. I did. It's just the nature of the beast, not a lack of good dental hygiene, or anything genetic.

Not only did I go to the dentist, but my daughters went twice a year for cleanings, from the time they were about 6. Dd #1 took after her dad. His side of the family had lots of cavities, and dental issues. She brushed, and flossed religiously, but was always getting cavities.

Dd #2 took after me. She had good teeth. I had to constantly fight with her to get her to brush her teeth. The night before her dental appointment, unbeknownst to me, she would get the Comet cleanser, and scrub her teeth, and rinse real good. The dentist would always compliment how clean her mouth was, and proceed to tell Dd #1 she should brush regularly, and keep her teeth clean like her sister did. That would infuriate her. Dd #1 never said a word, but you could see a little steam coming out from her ears.

When they got older, Dd #1 stopped getting cavities, and her mouth was in fairly good shape. Due to her poor oral hygiene practices, Dd #2 started having trouble with her teeth. Dd #2 got a toothache. Dd #1 said, "Good, you deserve it". "All those years they told me I should brush my teeth like you, and I did brush, and floss, but you didn't, it would just infuriate me". "I'm glad it finally caught up to you." "Suffer!" We all had to laugh.

When I went through chemo I used that biotene mouth rinse. It seemed to help. I never got any mouth sores thankfully. Chemo is hell.

I bet it is awful in so many ways, Lisa. I have very dry eyes now and I am always drinking water to fix my dry mouth. I was going to try Biotene rinse myself.

@getaclue , Cheryl, that is a funny story (COMET?? GEEZ!) but so true! People can brush ten times a day and rinse with peroxide daily and still have issues. There is a genetic component as well as medications can come into play, too, wreaking havoc on your teeth. I'm just glad that now, I have set aside money from the same of my dad's house to deal with my deferred dental work. Now, if hoochie-mama had done the right thing and not been such an opportunist, I could have had hair transplants, too, darn it!

I'm glad you are able to get your dental work done. Hoochie-mama! :lau

yes, how I always referred to her since she was only a couple years older than me and from Venezuela, married my father to become a citizen, then, as I predicted (and NO ONE would listen) she pretty much abandoned him when she got what she wanted. Yeah, Hoochie-Mama fits.
