Whirlpool has at least 2 top loading models that have the impellers, that get great reviews. Both are good choices.

I think I bought one of them at Lowe's. I saw the same exact Whirlpool machine we got, same size tub, only with a see-thru lid for $719 at Home Depot, so by getting the regular lid version, I got ours for about $450 with DH's 10% military discount on top of the sale price, not too shabby of a buy. I can't wait for Friday. I have to wash clothes! Actually, it's not critical yet, but it feels critical with no machine, LOL.

oldhens, I too had heard from a lot of people that the high end front loaders did not clean well. I've been using front loaders for years, and loved them because they washed cleaner than the top loaders. When I went to get my new front loader, I was replacing a GE that not only washed good, but would hold my king sized comforters, and quilts without a problem.

When I began researching them, the one thing everyone liked about the less expensive model GE front loader, was that it washed clothes really clean. That's what I got. I have not been disappointed. It has fewer settings, which doesn't matter to me, since it has the ones I normally use. It doesn't steam the clothes, but I didn't really want that feature anyway. Dh can go change oil in the vehicles, or in the tractor, spill a good bit of it on himself, and this thing gets his clothes totally clean.

The one major difference I noticed was the fill level. It does have plenty of water, but you can't SEE it, like in the older models. The water doesn't go half way up the door, which is really good. That way, if something does happen when it gets older, like the pump not working to drain the water out, you can open the door without water gushing all over. Mine has an extra opening, so I can check to make sure the pump is not obstructed too, and I can manually drain it, if need be. Those are good improvements.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, they are different than others I have heard, so it sounds like brand is more important. It's also good to hear from others that actually get dirty too. I may take another look at them.

I would probably keep getting nervously dirty, spilling my supper on myself, and slowly counting down my limited wardrobe until the new washer arrives. You don't realize how important stuff is until it's removed from you.

I have aSamsung front loader that works great, holds a LOT and gets my ironworker BF's clothes clean. Like with every washer if you overload it it will not work very well, and I always pre-treat stains, but I've been very pleased with it

Oh you all are giving me washer ENVY! We've got an old top load with center agitator that's not so big. It works, but with two very active little boys and a husband who is a teacher by day and farmer by afternoon/weekends, I keep that thing FULL. I dream of the day when I can get a BIG washer, one that will hold the comforters and all! Sadly, that day is not coming any time soon.... we have a back-up washer (and dryer) in the shed and I am too cheap to beg for a new one until those two go ka-put.

All that said, my days of going to the laundromat to wash comforters are in the past. I went just before Christmas last year--- the stomach bug had made its way through our house and everything needed a good cleaning. Just as I was leaving, a lady with bags upon bags of items came in. The bags were filled with rugs, which was not unusual, but the inch plus of animal hair on them was downright disgusting. She tossed them right in, animal hair and all. Wouldn't you think a person would shake them or sweep them off a bit before tossing them in? I mean, you are paying good money to use these machines, why not increase your chances of the machines doing a good job by giving the rugs a little pre-cleaning? I guess she doesn't need to worry about clogging her own pipes!! I love animals and all, and vacuum up my own share of shedding dog, but oh my goodness!

It's not necessarily the age, but the way my body feels due to my arthritis that made me choose the old part.

I also will never lay another egg in my life, nor raise any chicks. I also feel like I've been around forever like mold on cheese. Old goat would have fit me too.

Let me tell you, Miss Lisa, raising chicks ain't all it's cracked up to be. When I see my sons making bizarre choices, I just sigh, say I've done my time and if they want to screw their lives up, they can have at it; at least I don't have to pay for their mistakes now that they are grown (and aging) roosters. I won't have any grandchildren and frankly, I don't want any, never have. So, I'm free to be me now and take care of just me and hubby, just an older me. Leah's Mom is right, you are not an old hen, not by a long shot, though we all feel older than we are some days, I'm sure.

Than we are both free. I actually have no clue what to do with children, chickens and dogs I got. Give me a puppy any day, or a batch of chicks. I will always wonder about it though. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

My friends grandkids are cute. I can enjoy them without having to do anything with them except look at their pictures.

You are ruining my mid-life crisis, how can I wallow in self pity when you guys keep making sense.

I will be okay after this weekend, I'm just going into extremely nervous mode and should stop talking now.

I have to be at the hospital at 5:30 am, I'm debating not even bothering going to bed since I'm usually up until 1 am.

Sorry about all the disjointed thoughts, it's what's going on in my head.
