The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

OMGOSH! I have not had one of these in about 10 months. I'm really not even sure how long it's been! This is from my EE, Maretta. She will be 7 yrs old in April with the Stukels. I need to get her with Hector to get some barred EEs again (for my pal, wekiva bird, Robin in SC). They don't photograph well in my house, but it's a beautiful turquoise shade of blue.

Thought I'd post a link to this article that I got today regarding using coconut oil for animals in light of antibiotic resistance. Interesting. Footnotes at bottom.

Interesting. I bought some to try it on my birds, as suggested. Some will not touch it. Some will eat it like it's candy. Some will only pick at foods with it mixed in, like scrambled eggs where it can melt into the food. Because it's rather cool most of the day, it solidifies fairly soon after giving them anything with the coconut oil added. Then, some just pass it by. It is still weird to read about benefits after all those years being told it was a bad fat and one to avoid, as you can imagine. I actually tried the oil pulling method for my teeth to see if it tasted awful, but actually, it has a mild coconut taste, not bad at all. Helps that I like coconut, too, I suppose. I won't do more until I get my final bridge put on Thursday. Folks swear by it, some say it's voodoo, LOL. Probably the same folks who push fluoride on us and put it in everything, though it was used as an insecticide and as a mood tranquilizer in the death camps of Nazi Germany. I don't use fluoride toothpastes anymore because it adversely affects the thyroid and I'm hypothyroid.

As far are my two Brahma hens with crop issues, Bailey will not touch the stuff. Betsy will eat eggs with it mixed in until it begins to solidify. Neither is much better. I have no idea why the crops are not responding to treatment. Betsy has been like this for over two weeks, maybe three, now. Bailey, I'm not sure about, but we just began working with her a few days ago.

Interesting that some will eat it and some not. Sometimes my birds will eat it like candy; other times they won't touch it.

Perhaps they know when they need what's in it?

After seeing the differences in coconut oils, there's only one brand I purchase. They aren't all created equally it seems.

Demonized coconut oil....

There was so much marketing for chemistry-lab-created "foods" (and manufacturing by-product "foods") as being great for us. In the past I blindly listened to what was promoted as "science"...until I found out that much of "science" has been disproven - especially in the medical and "food" fields. Now I'm trying to use common sense. I just try to think it through and look for items that are found in traditional diets as much as possible, and avoid synthetics and items that are by-products of the mfg. process for something else.

Don't get me started on fluoride and immunizations....

This is what I bought, a little over $4, not a bad price, I guess, from the other stuff they had on the shelf. I had heard someone say that the wrong type would taste like a mouthful of lard, but this really does have a fresh coconut taste, at least to me. I haven't consumed any of it myself, probably won't (calorie-dense), just did the swishing around my mouth for a few minutes (hard not to swallow) and spit it in the trashcan because, well, it would potentially clog pipes. I had nothing to lose in trying it for the ailing birds, considering it is antibacterial and anti-fungal. I put some in my tub of body cream, too, and stirred it in. Have to find other uses. I may get another, larger jar of it soon.

I had a dream last night that you said you put vitamins in all your chickens water and when you woke up they ALL were having crop issues and you had no idea what was going on or what to do anymore. I’ve obviously been thinking about your chickens a lot lol.

What a pretty egg! Neither of my EE are laying. One was laying nice blue eggs but stopped as the days got short and the other has never laid, will probably have to wait until the days get longer again.

Your dream sounds exactly like something that would happen to me. And a neighbor on the main road down the mountain has about six chickens in a dog kennel by the road, partially covered by a tarp with a stick for a roost and no shelter. Folks like that will either have no issues, or they consider dead chickens just a "meh, whatever" and go on and get more.

I had a weird dream, too, but it involved Tim McGee from NCIS dressed like Officer Don from the old Popeye Club giving me directions to my Criminal Justice class. Yeah, no idea about that one. No chickens in it, crazy as it sounds.

You know that my background is in science, and worked in research labs for years. One of the most important aspects of research is relying on rigorously evaluated data. That means evaluating it without preconvictions. Too much of what is said about coconut oil is the kind of hyperpositive speculation that I find suspicious. I have seen too many diet fads come and go to not be concerned about the claims of a new one.

Coconut oil is 100% fat. No diet is healthy that increases the amount of fat you consume beyond a certain amount. It may be a better option than some other days, but Olive oil and high-oleic safflower oil are likely at least as beneficial.

Here is the link to an article that at least attempts to evaluate some of the claims of coconut oil
