Geez, no notifications of any of the last page of posts here. No alerts when I got here, either. I doubt I'll ever had another dog. Tom does not want one. I said that it would have to just show up and be chicken-friendly like the cat did/is. Then, I can say it was not my decision, that it wanted to live here.

Babies got to go outside in the temp pen today.

Here are the laced orp babies.

Yellow Band. I LOVE the coloring on this baby as a chick.

They look great. I bet they had a blast after their initial fear.

They did. It was quite a feat catching them to get them out there, though.

I use a small fishing net to herd mine into a 5 gallon bucket, than I carry them in the bucket back and forth. I leave the bucket on it's side in case they want to sit in it to warm up. Probably not necessary now, but earlier in the year a bucket heats up in the sun like a solar powered brooder they use if necessary.

I caught each one individually then put them into a rubbermaid type tub that has an attached overlapping flap-type lid. Perhaps I could herd them in there rather than catch individually... I'll have to think about the logistics of that for a bit.

I'm also not too concerned about them thinking I'm king Kong. I don't over handle my chicks, so maybe catching is more friendly than my herding. Mine always end up fine with me as adults.

oldhens, my chicks seem to go through stages of being afraid, then friendly, then afraid. Like you said, mine end up fine as adults.

I'm still trying to imagine the logistics of getting 15 chicks herded into a container and getting the lid shut before they all start running out again.

PS: I don't think catching is more friendly than herding...I think it must be terrifying to be chased around!

If I can get it to work, herding sounds like it would be less stress
