The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

I have to share this with you. I get a poultry magazine on my pc based more towards the industry. Like how they are almost ready to sex chicks at conception or prior to hatching. Good to know some people out there are tired of culling male chicks.

Anyhoo, they come up with this article about a way to humanely destroy like a thousand chickens like in those warehouses. They were saying they could "humanely" just cut off the ventilation! Or have CO2 pumped in.

So I comment that i'm delighted that they learned something from the Nazi's and how they "humanely" exterminated Jews by "warehouse exterminations". I also said I noticed that this article came out a week after the open fire on a Synagog. I also said something about their profits from these lives and their lives and deaths are more important than profit. I did not say they will one day have to answer for their decisions. HA.

Well I can't find the article anymore. Makes me think they had to pull the article, LOL. They should think about the stupid ideas they have.

I have one surviving BO from a past order of chicks. A few years ago the geese I had were after her and she LEAPT into my arms! Then this happened a few times and one time I had to hold her for an hour before she stopped shaking. Well that was a few years ago.

Today i'm locking one pen, turn around, and this chicken leaps into my arms! Turns out her roost-mate is growling at her! Poor baby. So I put her in a nest with another nest sleeper. It's been a few years since she's done that. Maybe she needs new friends.

Only a quilter would understand this. 15 years ago I made my mom an oversized king quilt. I gotta take a picture. Took me 4 months to make even by machine. She hardly used it because she loves buying cheap quilts from stores. Well I actually got it back today!!! The conversation just drifted in that direction where she was showing me her new quilts from *****. As a bonus she gave me a couch quilt that she never used as well! Unused quilts from 15 years ago!

I certainly didn't mind making everyone a quilt way back then. But then a quilter, who has put alot of work into a quilt finds that not everyone appreciates the work that's gone into a quilt along with a piece of themselves in every block.

I gave my daughter a quilt as a wedding gift and I think it took her years to realize what a quilter has given them. But she now knows.

Good thing since i'm moving up by her!

Cynthia, I think the name should reflect that it's Your interpretation of simple life. Not really raising chickens for meat but still making pancakes from scratch, no mix, etc.

I remember the day you got your last oven/stove. It had those coil electric burners on it. You were so happy getting a new one. At the time I lived in LINY, and of course people there have to have the latest and greatest only to eat out 5 nights a week.

But you really sparked something inside me that maybe humbled me. I realized how far away I had become from what I really wanted my life to be. I now get my 100 year old house to not have any appliances that tell time and date, remind me of appointments, chat with Alexa, or program with wi-fi or watch my dog when i'm not home.

Maybe part of having chickens is some of that. The chores are certainly humbling, and I am lucky to have the opportunity to shovel craap ., and cuss when a rooster just won't shut up.

Apparently, this house is surrounded by a farmer who raises cows. May be a blessing?

Such a sweet thing to say, Karen. I think you'll like the cows. MANURE!! When we lived in Utah, there was a cow pasture across the street from our house (now a strip mall, I think) and I loved to watch the cows chase the dog and the dog lope along behind the cows, the farmer on his tractor, etc. Of course, I grew up going to my grandfather's farm and being around Angus cattle, hogs and chickens anyway and now, I live in a very rural mountain town with all that and more.

A few months after I got that new stove, we had the house fire, I think you may know...so I got yet another new stove, this time gas because we found a company that would deliver a smaller amount (many would not do it only for cooking), and a pretty much new house, too, LOL. But, the fire, though insanely inconvenient, was actually a blessing in disguise in a way. New kitchen, refinished floors, new to the studs and roof decking, plus, it necessitated us spending a chunk of extra change ($16K) to get the entire leaking, badly built porch roof torn off and rebuilt with a proper rise/run, adding a 4th side that was only corrugated plastic originally (don't ask me why it was done that way, probably to save $$). The roof decking had to be repaired then all the 20 year old shingles replaced and it made no sense to leave the porch roof as-is so we bit the bullet and got it done when they did the renovation.

I do think folks need to quit "wanting". I find that it is actually a new habit they have to cultivate, the less-is-more habit. After awhile of not being able to get the latest and greatest, you realize that you don't need it or even want it. If I won the lottery (quite the trick when you don't play), I would never live like a millionaire because it does not appeal to me. I've found a normal for me that is comfortable and satisfying.

Quilts for family, a tough subject for me! I made everyone something one year and after the way they were received by some, no more. Some are still on my list that I would be happy giving quilts to, but most, not again. It's just SO much work! This current project is a real BEAR! It's huge and frustrating and a TON of work and I'm on the last round now, thankfully, but it's not been easy, even with the nifty drop-in table Tom made for me. If he hadn't, there is no way I could have done this quilt at all.

Karen, your box should be there today. Hope you like it.

Here is the current quilt in progress. Not happy with some of it, but oh, boy, what a chore! I tried some ruler work, a new skill for me, still free motion, but again, yet another skill to perfect. It would not have been so hard on a smaller project, though. If you really look at commercial quilts, they are not 100% great, either, aside from even the substandard fabrics and batting used in them.

This one is not going to be given away, not after all this! I may end up selling if for less than what the work entailed would justify, but still, it is too much work to be given to someone who is not going to appreciate the labor as well as the gorgeous, quality fabrics in there.

I'm thinking "A Simply Fuller Life... with Cynthia Fuller" for the channel, the last three words sort of a subtitle thing. .
