Make my hatching seem puny in comparison! I'm at my last set for sure . . unless I put in more turkey or duck . . .

SOunds like you an intervention! Or join Incubators Anonymous! See you over there!!

On another note--love the pic of your rooster--so hard to get those crowing pics!! My tiny silver s[angled hamburg ruled the barn yard, until the marans grew up. THey are all good boys and easy to have around!

Yinepu---

I stuck a couple duck eggs in the incubator. How much do I spray the eggs, and how do I avaoid hitting the chicken eggs?

Does the spray increase the moisture loss of the duck eggs, or decrease the loss. I know I read this somewhere, just can't find it.

Last q--as these are my own eggs, I have been incubating on their sides X and O style. I assume this is ok as I don't have a turner.

Need to go set 9 turkey eggs, and final turn for the day.

just don't worry about misting the chicken eggs too.. if you notice there are 2 chicks in with the ducklings (little silkie and d'uccle mixes).. they were cooled and misted right along with the pekins.. and had 100% hatch rate on those little chicken eggs
the spraying helps with evaporative cooling.. so it helps cool the eggs to help the embryo be stronger and it supposedly helps with moisture loss.. however the moisture loss is minimal.. so I don't really consider it to be as important as the cooling. As an embryo grows it begins to generate it's own heat.. as time goes by the embryos can generate enough heat that they will become overheated and can die in the shell if there are too many eggs in the incubator.. however by cooling them for a few minutes each day it helps lower that .. sort of gives them a break from excess heating. I found an article on it once.. will have to check and see if I can find it again.

here's the cooling & misting schedule I go by:
COOLING WATERFOWL
I start cooling incubating eggs on day 7.of incubation for 5 to 10 minutes
on day 14: I raise the time to 15 minutes and also start misting the eggs at the beginning of the cooling period
on day 21 and til external pipping: it goes to 20 minutes of cooling with the misting at the beginning of the cooling period per day

Ducks must be going around, my friend brought me 21 Muscovy eggs:D of course I set them.

I love muscovys!.. have hatched out bunches of them recently.. all from shipped eggs and in an incubator

Ok, I'm missing out on something here...girls..with duck faces???!

EWWWW! Just googled it..and saw some mighty ugly duck faces..why? Why? And I saw some other things I didn't want to see. Why? Why?

I'll stick to looking up the real ducks and chicken pictures..that's just wrong.

lol.. is this better?

I think I really lucked out on the BR turkeys.
They sound great! I'll have to remember those should I ever get into turkeys. Very cool.

OKay...I can't believe we are so close to the weekend already...let the final countdown begin...these few weeks went by fast for me. I will candle again one more time tonight, but as of today I have 7/8 still in the 'bator. One is very iffy and more than likely was a quitter at about day 10. I will know for sure tonight and will pitch or keep it. So that will leave me with 6/8 going to lock down. These are shipped Cream Legbar eggs.

for a good hatch for everyone!!!!

I need ducks, yes, need.

Day 18 began for me at about 6 pm yesterday. I readied for lockdown in the evening, but by the time I went to move them, I already had one pip! I have never had a day-18 pipper before. It was one of the two SS eggs I had stuck in at the last minute from my flock, so I am betting that someone was sitting on it for a few hours at some point. Anyhow, I kept it covered with a moist paper towel as I switched them over out of the turner, but I'll keep an eye on him because he's probably stuck. But, everyone else is looking good. I have 4 Australorp, 2 mixes, 2 SS, and 18 Basque Hen (Euskal Oiloa) eggs in the incubator and 4 Basque Hen eggs under my broody Welsummer.

My broody is in a dog crate in the main coop, and I plan on moving her and her brood a day after hatch to a place where they will not be harassed. I've been picking her up and putting her outside every day, but I am figuring I should not do that now that she is in "confinement." Any advice for locking down with a broody? I only had one girl get this far before, and I just had her sitting in a nest box, so this is new. Thanks, and good luck to all!

Do you follow a similar schedule for chicken eggs? If so, you still mist and cool the eggs after lockdown?
