The Fathers Day Hatch-A-Long!!! The Last Day To Set eggs Is June 3rd!!!!

Our Black Java Broody hen, Tiger, was sitting on 5 Black Java eggs - I had a conference to attend for three days - and now she has 11! I had marked the original 5, and have marked the other new additions - so the new ones are 3-4 days older than the original eggs. Will this pose a problem down the line?

Because they're brown eggs, I've got to get a stronger light to candle. Suggestions? I'd read a slide projector works great for brown eggs. Now, to run an extension cord out to the coop to use one! (In-laws have one)

Lastly, this morning, I found a broken egg under her. Cleaned up the mess as best as I could - but didn't have a moment to wipe all the eggs off. What should I watch for - bacteria? Fungus? It's going to be 95 degrees tomorrow, so ewwww....!

We're 12days from first hatching. Can't wait!!!

Is anyone else having trouble keeping their temps right in the bator? I am getting 2 to 3 deg change between morning 99.8 to 102-103 at noon to 2 p.m. my window in the room is closed and door is also closed only my 2nd hatch 1st hatch temp stayed right at the 100 deg mark. just wondering what was up with that? change in room temp? do i need to worry about it? set temp lower - longer hatch time but the high spike would be lower?

I don't know if my pic of all my eggs in my bator came through but here they are. Hopefully!

Beautiful eggs!! Have you read the LG threads--there are a couple with great information on the nuances of the LG. Besure to move those eggs into diferent locations, LG can run warmer and cooler in zones.

Don't five up on the ones you can't see veins in. 5 days can be early for some.

Wash those eggs in warm water. THe egg mess will block the air pores of the shell.

Are you planning to have the hen brrood the chicks? SHe may quit the nest when most of the chicks need to get to food and water. Perhaps plan to have an incubator to finish the job. You can brood the older chicks until all have hatched, but sometimes, so I have read, hens maynot accept the chicks back. Do some reading and research for other threads on this--others have had this happen many times. GL

My 2x amers started hatching this morning and some of them have furry feet and 5 toes :(

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

The silkie pen is right next to the amer pen but I have NEVER seen anyone in the wrong pen.

I'm going to have to put out a game cam to see what is going on when I'm not looking.

If you have gotten amer eggs from me recently I am really sorry and will re send when I catch the culprit. Some of the chicks are amers but a few are not. They are cute little buggers. Maybe frizzle amers?

I'm gonna go throw up now.

Ok. 9 more are out and are what they are supposed to be. :). We do have an amer hen that jumps the fence to lay her egg by the pool, maybe she made a wrong pen choice on the way back one time.

Geez, those things can happen despite the best planning. Sorry.
