How long does it usually take a chick to zip?? Then hatch out??
This isn't a simple answer. Ihave had the first chick to pip be the last to hatch because it was stuck. If they haven't finihsed zipping in 18-24 hrs, I start opening carefully looking for veins, if so I STOP and wait until they fade away. I've saved many chicks, though not all. I also listen to their peeps, if it is regular, I let the chick wait; if fading, it may need assistance sooner. The last chick I assisted was deformed sufficiently that it would never have hatched on its own.

Cute! Peek a Boo! They are so darling. That's a lot of chicks!

Well my actual Father's Day hatch was good...6/8. The six are healthy and running around the brooder growing and being adorable.

This weekends hatch was a total flop. I had 22 eggs start out with this batch. Shipped silkie/showgirl eggs and FBCM. Of the silkie eggs, three went to lockdown. I really thought one was already a quitter, but my husband was trying to be hopeful. So I was already upset that only 3/10 grew at all. With the Marans, they were so dark shelled that I couldn't tell what was going on with them. 11 went to lockdown, we removed one because it was weeping.

So on the night of day 21/early morning of 22 I had a silkie egg hatch into a very cute showgirl. We named it Vegas. Sadly, it has black and white skin and only 4 toes, so not breeding quality there at all. Nothing else, not a pip or chirp. When we took Vegas out we candled the other silkie that had been moving and it appeared it was pipping internally. I was so exited.

So the day goes on and on...nothing from any of them. Last night...still nothing...this morning, still nothing. We decided to candle that silkie egg again this morning to see what is happening there...it internally pipped and then quit. So we then decided to crack open a Marans and see what was going on with them. Of the 11 I think only 3 had any signs of growth, but all quit at least by day 3-5. The last one I cracked open had a chick, but it had internally pipped and quit as well.

So the last egg to crack open was the silkie one that had pipped internally...darn it..It was solid black with five perfect toes.

So between cost of eggs and shipping I have one $100 showgirl that is not of breeding quality. I am heartbroken, but not going to give up yet. I know shipping and hatching is a gamble. This was just not a good week at that table for me.

So I still have one more set in the incubator set to hatch this coming weekend. Hoping for better rate with them. So I am still on the hunt for showgirl egg and some more quality FBCM eggs.

Do you know about the technigue to sand the marans eggs lightly? FInd the Mahonri's Easter Hatch along. Look at the first post for hatching tips. read thru until you find the infor from CHooksshick on prepping shipped marans eggs for incubating. If you can't find it, I'll go look for it and link it.

THAT is frustrating. So sorry.

This is quite a learning experience, isn't it?

Yes...it is quite the experience. It is frustrating to live where there are just not a lot of people breeding certain things, so local eggs are hard to find. I have the eggs in the last incubator and when they are done I am taking a break for a while. I am going to give the incubators a rest. :)

I did just read the info about sanding. I think I will try that next time.
