My family and I moved down to Layafette, LA around 1977 (the year of the hellish snow storm you Northerners had, we missed it

) and the thrill of checking out the backyard I had to go. Upon opening the door, Mom yelled GET YOUR SHOES ON!

"Why?" I asked. I wanted to go outside barefooted.

"Because there are fire ants!"

"Oh, those red ants.............nah, Mom, they are harmless" We do have black and red ants up here but none of them bit me.

Out I went, not listening to Mom, telling me to get back in the house.

A few steps later, OUCH OUCH.....oh they HURT! And those things crawling on me! Painful bites I tell ya!

Mom had a good chuckle and said "I told you so!"

Yeah Mom, I should HAVE listened to you.

Oh they are everywhere! Even on the Spanish moss, the kids at school would do some mean things, taking a piece of the moss, heavy with fire ants and shove them down to an unsuspecting kid and watch him howl, stomp and doing the fire ant dance. It was a laugh but I had mixed reaction to laugh and cry...I didn't handle that joke too well.

Didn't they use fire ants as a medical remedy back in those days?

I don't know but my doctor told me I have a , in his words, "Disturbingly high pain tolerance"

when I was in my car accident, I didn't realize my shoulder was shattered until the doctor told me a week later. they missed it in the hospital. they actually didn't think I was that injured because I was warm and friendly and not screaming. My ribs were cracked, my shoulder fractured then developed avascular necrosis, i had been knocked out, part of my vertibres had been separated, my hips rotated and shifted, and my lower fescets damaged. (i know I misspelled a lot of that)

All know is I could not really use that one arm, and I kept getting head aches, and I had to sit down a lot, and laying on my chest made it feel like I couldn't breath.
