The flocks first winter

The Jaerhon. I'm not as keen on the Penedesencas.
Keen - as in familiar or none too fond?
Jaers lay lots of white eggs and are smallish birds not much bigger than bantams. The smallest birds I've raised.
Penedesencas lay one of the darkest eggs in the world and are very productive. Along with Empordanesas (from Emporda) they are the only brown egg layers with white lobes.

Sorry to the OP for hijacking your thread.

I like the Jaehons because of their bantam like size and behavior.
I occasionally see Pendedsencas when I go up to the animal rescue center at the Emporda National Park.
I help out occasionally. They get a bit overwhelmed when the trappers turn up to steal the song birds.

If you ever get a chance to speak with someone who raises black Penes or see dark eggs at a market, I'd like to hear about it. I need to contact some breeders there. It would probably be around Villafranca.

I don't know how they cope but cope they must. You can't really be a Landrace fowl in these regions without having to deal with deep snow.
I have a contact in Finland who is involved in the preservation of original Nordic breeds and I've asked him for a video of his chickens in the snow before. I haven't received one yet although I remind him when we communicate.

I would really like to see that video if you ever get it. I think that would be really interesting.

None of my flock really enjoys the deep snow, though my Faverolles seem the most adventurous in light snow. One of my Browns, Sassy, did attempt the deep stuff but fluttered and stumbled back into the coop quite quickly. It was quite the sight:lau

Lol, talking about Med breeds in a thread about snow. For me, I would love Minorcas, though not sure how well they would hold up to a February in NH.
