The flocks first winter

There are some breeds that do manage on deep snow; the Finnish Landrace and some of the Swedish landrace breeds for examples.
There are also local breeds in Afghanistan and Northern China that are reported to cope well in deep snow.
Are the landraces better suited because they are lighter? A lot of chickens in the US are probably too heavy to do very well because they can't bridge the snow and instead sink in it. I found a rooster high centered a couple years ago! Luckily he hadn't been there long :p

I don't know how they cope but cope they must. You can't really be a Landrace fowl in these regions without having to deal with deep snow.
I have a contact in Finland who is involved in the preservation of original Nordic breeds and I've asked him for a video of his chickens in the snow before. I haven't received one yet although I remind him when we communicate.

Well, if he ever comes up with one, I'd love to see!

I raised Norwegian Jaerhons for a while. They certainly didn't mind the cold. They molted in January every year. I don't remember snow with them. I think back then I had more covered runs.
Now all my birds are from your neck of the woods. Penedes, Catalonia.

Lovely looking birds.
