The Fortunate Unfortunates!

Oh man, I have so many fortunate unfortunates. I'll go search for pics.

Well darn. All I found was 4 month old, and adult pics of one of my fortunate unfortunates.

(Sorry for the horrible pics, this was before I got my 'better' camera.)

This is Coko. She is a Danish brown leghorn that I purchased from our local feedstore. The feedstore's brooder set-up is downright horrid. They bought long sets of drawers, and transformed each drawer into brooders. Well, although it seems like a good idea, it really isn't. The poor chicks don't get barely any ventilation, and bake under the heat of the lamps. On top of that, they pack so many chicks in there that they hardly have any room to move.

So, among the cute little chocolate colored babies, I saw a super, super tiny one being trampled by the others. She was face down, her back legs sprawled out beneath her. I thought for sure she was dead, and was just about to make a comment to the worker who was helping us, when she lifted her head and blinked her eyes. I could tell she wasn't sleeping, and knew I had to get her out of there. Soo, I 'begged' my mom (I didn't really beg, only asked her if we could purchase her. She's just as much as a softy as me.XD) to let us get her, and then I found myself with a box full of weakly peeping babies. There was an EE, another white leghorn, and a buff orpington. ALL of them had the worst cases of poopie-bootie I have ever seen. I mean it was caked all over their rumps! I hand-fed them, gave them electrolytes in their water.. you name it. I tried everything. Well, one after the other most of them died. Until I only had Coko. You know, I hate to say it, but I was very disappointed about that. She wasn't the most sociable chick of the bunch.

As she grew, she was always tiny, much like Pipd's Biddy-Bird. But, she was so very pretty.

Here is a picture of her with some broodmates that I hatched later. She was such a pretty pullet.

Here is miss Coko today, at 4 years old. She is very flighty and really hard to take a picture of, but I love her all the same!

I have a Fortunate Unfortunate!

Well, at least my sister does, anyways... I need to get a pic of him and then I'll post his *sniffle* sad story.
