The Front Porch Swing

HI all..............
Nice to see some post on this thread. It would be nice to have a place to come chat with everyone.
I have been sticking to the NC thread and barely going anywhere else.
I have hardly swapped this year ....I swapped for some essential oils on WYGS awhile back..that is it.

I also have some meaties that need to get n the freezer....wish it would cool down a bit. I don't enjoy this hot humid weather.

I had looked for cornish x to do meaties, but got 26 straight run chicks at big r in Elizabeth, co for .80 each. I only see maybe 9 boys so far!

Then I got 6 chicks from a friend who thinks an orpington got in her cemani pen!!

My bf reminds me that my 26 straight run are for meat. As well as any of the haffies (cemani x orpington) unless I can weasel my way into getting them into my layer flock of mostly ee's, ameracuna, with 1 rose comb leghorn and a white splash polish who got a haircut last night to help her see better. Poor Phyllis. And a semi-quieted rooster named Lenny who is a salmon favorelle x wellsummer x light brahma and very good to his flock. Atm he's doing lamaze for the girls that are egg songing atm. It's funny!

Waiting for all 9 to start laying is taking forever... one 15 month old ameracuna is off her lay. What the cluck Jeanette?

My bf enables my chicken math to take over and my ocd= obsessive chicken disorder take control of our lives since June. We have 42 chickens. Yes. 42 chickens. What the cluck indeed.

just weasel those pullets into the pen. Does he count birds in the pen? Just add one or two a day until you've kept all you want to!

Hahaha no, he does count chickens! And it was his idea to weasel a few in a couple weeks ago, I didn't think I'd end up with so many pullets!

And I have 6 chicks in my bathroom too. Which will make it into my laying flock when they're big enough.

And more chickens otw soon! My friend said she's still hatching! Oh my chicken math rules my life.

I just put a cake pan of my garden dirt into the brooder box and they went wild!! Hardly any poop in their water dish for once and none in their food either. Happy dance!

If there's a chicken swap nearby soon I'll take the pullets in my itty bitty peep peeps (meaties) to see if they might make some ppl breakfast in the winter/spring?

Time to ramble about my growing flock. Managed to hatch one of my own this year, I think a cross between my RSL and Americauna and ,of course, I believe it's a roo. Naturally. I bought 12 babies from the local feed store three weeks ago ISA browns, nice birds so far, calm, getting used to the Chicken Farm. These babies were out n the dog cage i have fixed up for them beside the coop. A metal cage about two by three feet, wrapped with chicken wire. Went out yesterday to give the girls some tomatoe scraps, corn cobs, bread and what was standing next to the metal cage peering at me over the top of it? A large red tail hawk. It didn't even fly until I was within ten feet of it. It had managed to snag one of my babies, pull it out and had eaten part of it. The other babies were terrified. My two Roos had moved ALL the ladies under the deck or in the coop. Such good roosters. So I took the babies in the house and built a more secure place for them. My first loss ever because of predators. It's sickening. Live and learn and it could have been worse. The hawk was not going to leave by the way, my hubby shot several shots in the air and convinced him the buffet was closed! Don't know what I did before my flock, love my chickens all 44 of them!

Sorry I've been away so long! I feel like I'm only here on very sporadic occasions. Apparently, doing a third masters, working full time, joining a new therapy cohort with the state, trying to manage a small farm, and keeping a social life are not wise to combine. I am only on here today because I'm sick and my doctor told me to stay home from work and take it easy. Since the last time I was on here, I have gotten about 15 Rees Line Legbars. I have around 10 cockerels and the rest hens. So, I will have several cockerels/roosters for sale once they grow out. They are pure Rees Line and will have some great genetics. I can already see a HUGE difference between them and my Legbars from 3 different lines of Greenfire birds I've gotten in the past. Please PM me if you'd be interested in a cockerel or two and I can let you know when they're grown out and I've done my selections. :)

Wel. My update now...ive got 20 POL birds and 20 hens and today 0 eggs...yesterday 0 eggs...the good news...my extra roos and freedom rangers were processed:) molting like stupid;(
