The Front Porch Swing

Hello mind if I pull up a chair & sit a spell. Sounds like many of you live like we do, a little differently. My husband has been in a wheelchair for 40 yrs so nothing is normal in our house. We have 5 dogs , 4 cats, 23 chickens & 5 alpacas. Our daughter, son-in-law & 2 grand sons live with us. Guess you could say its one big party.

Welcome to the Porch.... there are a bunch of buckets to sit on and a swing.... Oh and one of the buckets has a Turtle in it.... I forget whos that is. I sit on the bale of hay.

Usually there is something to nibble on around here.... And some Tea or something a little stronger for those of us who are done for the day.... LOL

Further question for northern flock owners: How high is your coop from grade level, are you happy with this distance, what have you done to rodent/predator proof the space under your coop, do you allow chickens access under any part of your coop?

As previously stated, mine is a repurposed horse stall in an OLD barn. There is no floor, only dirt under the stalls. I put 1/2" hardware cloth over the floor and a foot up the walls under the horse mats when I saw an ermine by the house. I couldn't do the 'bury it out 18" to prevent digging' thing. I tried in the stall next to the one I converted and in the alley in front of the "now a coop" but the mice and voles have tunnels all over the place and they don't start digging near the wall. Their tunnels are easy enough for an ermine to follow even if it means a little digging on its own.

If I had an "external stand alone house" that was not big enough for me to walk into, I think I would place priority on having it high enough for the birds to use the space under the coop AND at a height where things in the coop would be easy for me to reach for daily maintenance, etc. My preference would always be something big enough for people to go in, then it would be ground level with proper predator barriers.

Katie surprised me too. She was very matter-of-fact asking Grampa what this part was, or what that part did. I had to turn away when she admired what a pretty pink color the lungs were. I was trying not to laugh at the image of an 8 year old girl admiring the look of a chicken's internal organs. Silly baby!

No, future biologist, zoologist, scientist.

I have a rooster that sings the egg song ! Well, I guess he is a rooster. He has a rooster comb and wattles and 'roosterish' hackle feathers, but no male saddle feathers. I don't think I have ever seen him crow or mate a hen. But, he definitely sang the egg song yesterday while escorting me around to do the feeding!

Welcome to THE FRONT PORCH! We are always open for more companions. Would you like Sweetened or Unsweetened Tea? Please stop by and tell us some stories or show us pictures. We love both!

Off to the Columbus Zoo today. Jayla has a flight out to go home tonight so we decided we could get in one last treat. We will do as much of the zoo as we can then go to the airport. Having both girls here has been a handful. Madi had just really settled in when Jayla arrived. For two weeks neither of them has done much except fight and sleep. Starting tomorrow Madi will have a schedule again and get back to her schoolwork. I will be relieved. Having two teens in the house has been a little stressful. Thank God I have a very patient and understanding husband. Yesterday he took them out and gave them shooting lessons. The grins on their faces were priceless. They sent pics to their parents before we were back to the house. Well, off to fix everyone breakfast, get the car loaded, and pack a lunch. After paying almost $20 for 2 dipping dots and 3 waters the other day at The Wilds, we will be bringing our own treats to the zoo!!!! Welcome Aussiegal
