The Front Porch Swing

Wow, no wonder my rooster is cranky, he's floating in a sea of hormones! He is the sweetest thing, I can pet him. But he came toe-to-toe with me today when I was trying to herd one of the ladies inside, and growled at me. He never growls at me.
yeah I had one do that with me and I have worked with him with the stick and everything and he's bound and determined! Even with me working him with the stick he STILL flaps his wings at me but wont get near me but I don't trust him to turn my back on him because you can tell he's itching. He's head set so I just took the other roo for my main roo. So I switched Roos and have him penned up and planning on putting him in a pot if this one continues to be nice. He's alerted the girls twice so far and I didn't know what he was doing since the other one had never done that. But when he did it they ran for cover. He's turning out to be a good roo! He sticks with me and hasn't ever tried to jump me stays with the majority of the girls. I don't want to pass that aggressive gene on in my eggs so I think the aggressive one will go into a pot. Since the second roo had been dominated by the other roo for so long he let the girls work his butt over. They pulled out feathers all around his tail until he only had 3 feathers left but I think that's because they were bored. I was like ok buster you gotta man up and stand up to these girls. lol BUT today I saw him do something that made me roll in laughter. I let them out to free range and I always let the penned up roo out to run around in the run while they all free range. I had opened the gate for them all to get out and forgot i had left the gate open and went in the other end opening it for the girls so they could get in to lay their eggs. All of a sudden I heard all kinds of commotion and I was like what in the world is that? Ran toward the run and then saw the door open and I was like OHHHH NOOOOO I left the gate open and he's OUT! Honey the nice roo was going at the aggressive roo with his feet and he was up in the air. It blew me away! Every time the aggressive roo would come toward him he was up in the air at him with his feet. I started trying to get my hands on the aggressive one and he wont let me near him since I trained him to stay away from me. So I was like HOW in the world am I going to get this thing BACK INSIDE the pen because I have NO net and was here by myself. arg! Do you know the good roo started herding the aggressive roo and I got on one side of him and we kept doing that until he got close to the pen. He wanted to turn back but the good roo started fighting at him again and he went into the roosting area while i was on one side and the good roo was on the other side of him. It blew me away and I don't know IF the good roo was aware of what he was doing but I was shocked. I figure he was trying to get him away from his harem that is HIS now. He's very protective and even with me he gets in between me and the hens but has never flapped his wings at me or anything. I think he's going to turn out to be a good roo.
Anyway I sure hope yours doesn't do that anymore because it's not fun having to worry about one jumping you 24-7 and keeping your eyes on him. Not that I don't do this one like that but not worried about him like I was the other one. Good luck with yours and I sure hope that was it on the growling. :-D

I hate to hear that Rachael.

Saying a prayer for them.
ah man I am so sorry about her dog. :(

My sister's dog did not make it. The whole family is devastated, even the Vets were crying. There has been a lot of loss in the family over the past year. Please now send prayers that help him guide them through. Thank you all for your support.

I am on page 96, saying this to mark my place. Life can be so amazing and so incredibly sad at the same.
I am soo sorry. I lost my Rosie this summer... it seems a chunk of you goes with them too.

Today I had my older pullets out free ranging and I went around that coop to go in the next one and I heard a big racket and wing flapping. I thought a dog or something had snuck up and was after them sooo, I took off running around the coop to see what was going on... left my shoe stuck in the MUD along the way! Got around there in one shoe and a sock on the other foot and they were just acting silly running, flapping and squalking! Mud mud everywhere! LOL

:goodpost:

My pullet that I thought wasn't laying..... well she is! I just didn't realize it because her egg is green/blue! I got 15 eggs today, out of 15 girls!!!!!! WOO HOO!!!!!!! I also trapped the varmit that was getting into my feed, and ransacking my building! The cat got a free meal, because all Hubby has is a 12 ga. There wasn't much left for us.
I haven't gotten many eggs this winter. Didn't keep any replacement pullets last fall. A couple of bad dog problems this winter......... any way eggs finally started coming. Last week back to no eggs again! Then we got snow and I see itty bitty tracks going in and out of the barn. Set my trap and caught ........ a squirrel! Now I am getting eggs again!! Who would have thought?????

Mine too and it is strange. I think the weather trends have got their hormones in a twist and soon they will even out. I'm down to one-three eggs a day...if that.
Thanks goodness I am not the only one experiencing this. I was trying to figure out what was wrong. Of course, I did find a secret stash toward the end of the day yesterday. 9 eggs!!! Unfortunately only 3 were good.

Man, is this forum dead tonight!  Must be something good on TV to lure folks away, 'cause they aren't chattering on the forum tonight.  What's the big draw out there in TV land?  :pop

My life is always weird like this....was raised without TV and haven't had one all these years(at least, not with any programming...just VCR/DVD player) since, so I never do know what is playing and am always mystified when folks can't get away from their programming.   Just called one son and he was in a hurry to get off the phone to watch some gun show thingy.

You'd think I'd get used to this but it always surprises me when the population collectively signs off of all other activities to park in front of the black box, like one big family.  It's puzzling and a little scary to think of something as powerful as that controlling the masses.

I work to support my little hobbies........ people are for ever asking if I saw what ever on the TV last night. I don't watch TV. Only on the rare occassion. They cannot understand. WHAT do you DO? They ask :)
Still reading to catch up........

That's funny. I was trying to get a different internet service a couple of weeks ago and tried a local cable company that offered internet as well - pretty cheaply. So the guy kept trying to set me up with an HDTV package before he would even talk to me about the internet. Wouldn't even tell me how much internet was if I bought the TV package. I kept telling him we don't watch TV. The only thing we do is watch VCR/DVD movies. We read. Really, we don't watch it! - He just couldn't comprehend it. I finally said goodbye without ever finding out how much the internet package would be if we did get TV. It just sucks your brain out anyway. We live in an area that can only use wireless/satellite - no cable lines run out here. We did finally settle on a satellite company, but the hoops to jump through just to do research were incredible.

When my daughter was little she was incredibly shy - she stayed at home when my husband got laid off and he doesn't talk very much - so when he went back to work we wanted someone to work with her and get her chatty. I know - I've been through the chatty stage with an older one but her stage still hasn't ended and she's 20. She's learned the art of distracting mom. So I drove the younger one to this girl's house every morning and every morning the TV was on. Every time I picked her up the TV was on. No one actually watched it, but it was on 24/7, I'm assuming it was so they wouldn't miss anything important. It was like the background music. Ever read Fahrenheit 451? It reminded me of that.

WHAT ????? it is so incredibly easy to grow, a lot of hard work to get started correctly. But once the stand matures is virtually care free. I love it.

Still reading through.....and kicking myself for joining this sooner.

We started growing asparagus 3 years ago, so while it should be a mature crop now, it was planted in a barrel while it waited on a more permanent spot. Which still hasn't been found. And I forgot to mulch it this fall and the temps have been enough to freeze the duck pool solid. I'm crossing my fingers, but doubt I will get anything. At least I still have seeds!

Anyway I sure hope yours doesn't do that anymore because it's not fun having to worry about one jumping you 24-7 and keeping your eyes on him. Me too! He was the sweetest out of the bunch, still doesn't offer any aggression to my 5-year old. I do have some roosters coming in about a month, so if Mister keeps getting worse, his replacement won't be that far behind.
