The Front Porch Swing

My sister's dog did not make it. The whole family is devastated, even the Vets were crying. There has been a lot of loss in the family over the past year. Please now send prayers that help him guide them through. Thank you all for your support.

I am on page 96, saying this to mark my place.  Life can be so amazing and so incredibly sad at the same.

I hate to hear that Rachael. :( Saying a prayer for them.

I am so sorry! Praying for them now!

Usually it's just the reproductive cycle working out the kinks and not a deficiency if you are feeding a regular layer ration.  Weird eggs happen from time to time but they usually happen on either side of a laying cycle, either going off of one or working up to one...we are all working up to peak laying for the year and by next month all chickens who are laying well, should be laying.

Thanks for the info, Bee. Yet again, my girls have been giving me about 10-11 eggs per day out of 13 layers and since the temps have warmed up a bit the production has dropped off... Down to 7 eggs today. I can't understand why during really cold snaps they lay well and when it warms up they drop off. One would tend to think the opposite ... I'm confused.

Mine have done the same thing. Strange!

Today I had my older pullets out free ranging and I went around that coop to go in the next one and I heard a big racket and wing flapping. I thought a dog or something had snuck up and was after them sooo, I took off running around the coop to see what was going on... left my shoe stuck in the MUD along the way! Got around there in one shoe and a sock on the other foot and they were just acting silly running, flapping and squalking! Mud mud everywhere! LOL

Mud everywhere! I lost a tennis shoe so badly that I never did find it. Stepped out of a truck and sank to my knees. Ick.

I figured the laying thing had to do with the days they could only eat layer feed - they just had to lay (ground frozen). The days they free-ranged they didn't lay as many (thaw). 'Course I could be way off.

I noticed lots of feathers coming out today, it got up to 70 and three days ago we had 8" of snow. Poor thing must think it's a really fast spring. I hope they stop, we WILL get more cold weather. The frogs don't think so though.

Naw...doesn't work that way. They don't lay because they eat layer food. They lay due to hormones that cause their ovary to develop and produce eggs. Supposed to be in the teens again here next week. Maybe the egg count will go up!

Wow, no wonder my rooster is cranky, he's floating in a sea of hormones! He is the sweetest thing, I can pet him. But he came toe-to-toe with me today when I was trying to herd one of the ladies inside, and growled at me. He never growls at me.

Well Bee, I am a week late but I got the eggs in the incubator. I thought I had enough for it and got them all marked this evening with their X's and 0's and got started putting them in there and realized I needed 5 more! :( I will just stick those in tomorrow. I did the others tonight so it shouldn't be THAT big of a difference I hope. Sure am hoping for a bunch of them to be fertile AND to hatch! HOPING I can video them hatching to. Anyway my sweet nephew let me borrow his incubator that has the whole top to where you can see what's goin on. LOVE this one! It has a fan to. Anyway some friends of ours was over this evening and she told me if I had too many they would buy some from me. Yipeee I sure hope I have too many. I am soooo excited because this is the first chickens I have ever hatched out or hoping to hatch out. My nephew that let me borrow his bator told me how he did his in it so I am following his advise and he dry hatches in it until the lock down day I think it was. Anyway I cut and pasted his info so I would remember it.

How is yours going Bee? You working on any of those videos yet? Or is it too cold to do that right now up that way?
