The Front Porch Swing

Deb, that's a shame about your horse. I felt bad when I read that. I don't use hay anywhere - never had a bale of it here. But I do know about the magnet thingy - Ken's family owned a ranch for many years and he had some of the magnets that are swallowed in addition to the ones that you just sweep. We rigged something up with the guts of an old stereo speaker and ran it repeatedly around the coop and the run until the last two passes came up clean. We were trying to be careful as we built the coop and run, but when you're working with chicken wire and hardware cloth and wiring them together bits can get dropped. We could well have missed something. Thing is the wire we found didn't look like the size we'd used - this little bit was really thin.

Quite a find in that bale you got! I would love to have seen the feed store guy when you told him about that!

Rita is the feed store guy.... LOL. Went from the Restuarant and Bar business to owning a feed store. I am a very regular customer there and somewhat of a friend. I only told her so she could go back to her supplier in order to let him know. Bad for business for each for sure.

You can never get it all no matter how dilligent. Normally chickens pick up little hard objects to help grind food. It was just the luck of the draw I am afraid.

I seem to have acquired plenty of glass in the loam that was brought to finish off my front lawn. I've been picking up squares of glass any where from 1/2" to 2" across, pieces of beer bottles, the occasional piece of wire. I'd complain to the guy who brought it to me, but I know it would be a waste of time. So, as I work on getting the lawn seeded, I'm checking out every single bit of reflected light to see if it might be a piece of glass. No matter how lush that lawn grows, we'll never be able to walk barefoot across it, not to mention the risk to animals. I remember reading a post by someone who stated that an old time farmer would feed broken glass to his chickens instead of buying grit. It takes all kinds.

Made a batch of Pepper Pot Noodle soup - some for supper tonight and the rest to freeze for those long, cold winter days coming.........oh, shoot, that would be tomorrow!!

Lost another bird... Found him dead yesterday morning. Seems nothing I could've helped.. his whole body cavity was filled with fluid and his heart looked misshapen, signs of congestive heart failure, likely a genetic defect. Glad it wasn't my doing, but still, he was one of my favorites.

After a few dying for different reasons and me selling a few last week we're down to sixteen chickens. I had two dozen a few months ago!

I'm so sorry, TT! Having just gone through this myself I know how sad it is.

I am asking for your prayers for a friend of ours. His daughter is a high school senior and has always put herself under incredible pressure to over achieve. She had a couple of disappointments and has run away from home. There was no family conflicts or anything, her parents offer a loving supportive environment and had been trying to talk her into reducing her workload. They have finally located her in New York, staying with someone she met online. The police have checked on her, and she is OK. I am praying that she stay safe and find her way back home to her loving parents.

How old is she? I'm assuming she is 18....is the "person" she met online a man? How old? She has my prayers for safety and future success in her decisions. Her parents have my prayers for peace of mind and faith that God will take care of her.

Will you save some for me?? Oh how I love soup. It seems like they don't offer it quite as much down here as they did back in the cold WI winters. Even McDonalds had soup on the menu. The creamiest broccoli and cheese ever. So good. So processed, but so good. (I am secretly excited about the fall and colder weather… I miss the smell of the wood stove

Prayers sent. I hope she finds her way back home soon.
