Well you know Blooie, I live next to the ocean, I can hear the waves at night! If YOU want to stay here and go surfing, you can! I won't be joining! lol. Where you live sounds amazing! Maybe one day we will be able to head that way and see some dinosaur stuff

I have to admit that the ocean is not my favorite place......goes counter to how most people feel about the ocean, but my entire family is like that. We used to go to the beach when we lived in San Diego and LA. I bit my tongue and took the kids because I thought they liked it. They tagged along even though they didn't want to because they thought I liked it. Turns out none of us like the feeling of sand in swim suits and between our toes, the stickiness of the drying salt water on our skin, and the intense sun. Whooda thunk? I've raised a family of mountain lovers! I love living in the mountains of Wyoming. But truth be told, I sure miss my wide open prairies of eastern South Dakota.

We've got a place for ya, Alice! We'll put up Motel 6 1/2! Be sure to bring some hiking shoes - lots to explore and see here.

I'm not too much of an ocean person either. Lucky for me we have the ocean and redwood forest too, so lots of hiking. My son loves playing in the sand and so does our dog. I take them for a bit. We have a trail that goes through the redwoods and overlooks the ocean. It's a long hike, but during high tide there's a blow hole that's fun to watch. I like to do that because my son feels like he's been to the beach, without actually having to go and the hike is nice. Blooie, if we are ever able to come, I would be glad to hit up "motel 6 1/2" and we have plenty of hiking boots to bring. Sounds amazing! I would love to one day visit every state.

Wouldn't that be sweet to go on a porch tour! I love the ocean. Nothing, and I mean nothing, rejuvinates my batteries like an hour walking on a sand beach. The feel of the sand as the surf washes it out from under my feet. The sound of the water, the gulls, children playing, the distant clanging of a buoy or the lines on the boat masts, the feel of spray against my face, even the smell of the salt water! And it's so much fun to poke around and see what creatures can be found in those little tidal pools.

I've seen some photo organizing software where you can tag the pictures, so you could write who's in it, where and when it was taken, what you're doing, and what's in the picture. That way you can then search through the photos quickly by entering keywords, like "Diane surfing" etc.

you can actually do that with Windows.... Look at the file properties and there is a tab that will allow you to annotate. Corel and Photshop have extensive tools for that as well.

I wish i had the presence of mind to go through my ten Gig of photos and do that.... sigh.

Back to kids and dinosaurs...
My nephew was really into dinosaurs as a little tyke. He was such a cutie, dark hair, big brown eyes and always an impish smile. The big dinosaur exhibit came to the local museum when he was about 4 years old and he was so excited to go see it. They got there and the museum had the volume turned up so loud you could hear the dinosaur roars in the parking lot. The closer they got to the exhibit, the bigger his eyes got and the more scared he got. My sister asked if he still wanted to go in, he was so scared he couldn't talk but he nodded YES! So my sister kneeled down in front of him and told him - if they scare you, roar back at them! He took her hand and they walked in ... little guy roaring at the top of his lungs! It was all he could talk about for months. He is now working on his PhD.

Now back to our currently scheduled topic ...
My family has always used mostly slide film. it was always an event when Dad pulled out the machine and set up the screen. Mom made buttered popcorn and we kids grabbed our pillows so we could lay on the floor.
We have an older scanner - one of the features of it was scanning in photos and slides. I had always wanted to get the slides from my Dad and scan them into the computer. Maybe make a couple of CDs for my sisters. DH mentioned that my Dad told him he would like to get the slides scanned in. He doesn't think he can find parts for the slide player anymore. DH asked if I would mind if we gave them our old scanner if it worked on their computer. well, DUH!

Corel and Photoshop both will handle negatives too. Probably my best restorations have been simply scanning in the negatives. you litterally make new photos from them. The nice part about doing that is the film is preserved in a container that is usually kept in an envilope or box to protect it from light. Light is a killer for photos.

Invest on a good scanner though.... Something that will do high resolution without crashing. The higher the resolution the better the editing process.

Also there are companys that will do the scanning process for you for a fee. Which may be preferable because they will have the automated ones. Ones that can scan at the rate of PAGES per minute. Especially if you have alot of photos.

If they are on your computer i find searching visually much easier... I personally know every picture I have taken... then when I find the one I want I opt to open the folder its in before opening the picture. This way I can find all the pictures taken at the same time. Time stamps are your friend... The camera makes them and the computer makes them.

I place all my photos in a file folder with a key word title... Like "Blooies folder" thats the start of the identification process. But when the photos cover years worth it gets pretty daunting. I am guilty of leaving the old camera tag on and only renaming it when its time to share with someone.

Ive lived near the ocean most of my life.... I love parking near and listening to it all... I even used to swim in the ocean when I was twenty something.... But I gain just as much peace in the desert.... So I am a Desert person... Love trees to visit... I even had an Aunt that hated trees on her property... she lived in Maricopa... Very desert even hotter than my place. And oddly a place where they dry farmed wheat... Never figured out how they did that.
