The Front Porch Swing

Beginners luck? I've often thought that over thinking these things probably leads to less success....folks used to incubate with all sorts of things other than an incubator and have good success. Sometimes the most simple ways are still the best ways.

I'm thinking of either incubating in a foam cooler with a light or with a heating pad, haven't made up my mind. Then, if I don't have a broody handy, I am thinking of brooding under a heating pad as well. I've long thought it could be possible and even more natural than a heat lamp/light.

Still researching the success rates of incubation on a heating pad, so haven't decided...the eggs I would be getting are pretty precious to be experimenting upon, so that's a factor.

@Leslie... that pic is so pretty! I love that color variety! They are all pretty, one second I think the dark ones are the pretties but then the pastels are so pretty too, and the whites just set them all off. I want ALL OF THEM! LOL I believe I am going to have to have some ducks...

Yeah ... if you're going for a variety of egg colors, the white eggs are essential to "set off" the rest. I treasure every single white egg.

Some days I get pinkish eggs ... either a dusty rose or a deeper almost purple color. Those are rare, but if I knew how to get more I'd go for it. Sometimes I get lots of speckles ... that makes me want Quail.

Ohhhh ...you're gonna keep on and have me wanting marans and easter eggers. I already want them! LOL

That must have been the case because I didn't have a clue what I was doing. But I read some of those posts where they try to make the whole process all scientific and I think, pffftt whatever, never seen a hen candeling eggs or with a gadget to check the humidity. lol I bet a heating pad would work. Might have to add a damp pad or something for some moisture. Also would have to find a heating pad without the new automatic cutoff feature. Some of this new safety stuff to keep us poor stupid people from killing outselves is a pain in the backside. LOL

That is true...never thought of the auto shut off. I'll have to see if mine has that. I bet a person can't buy one that doesn't have that but maybe a reptile heating pad would work. I don't want to get into too much money on it as that would ruin the experiment.

My whole life is an experiment in frugality and I've come to love the game of "how cheaply can I do that and still have good success?".

I agree about all the over complicated incubation info out there...you know how I hate it when folks take something simple and make it hard. I used to work for the government and that seems to be their mission in life, so I didn't stick with that job....cannot stand it when folks create work for the sake of just creating work. I like good ergonomics.

And maybe you can teach us a thing or three too? That's what we like to do...just put our heads together and see what ideas pop out!

Oh I know what you mean! I had one of those jobs where they were constantly coming out with new rules and procedures. About the time you learned something and felt confident about it they would change it! They wasted too many of my brain cells! LOL

Several years ago I bought a couple new heating pads for reptile cages then figured out they had the auto shutoff. Ended up using an old heating pad and still having to buy a reptile heating pad. If I remember correctly, that reptile heating pad was a little high, close to $40. It got pretty dang hot too. Had to put a couple layers of cardboard between it and the cage. You could make it work though.
