The Front Porch Swing

Congrats on the house WyoDreamer!!

Lindz, this is why I am afraid to go to TSC, I would come home with too many chicks!!

Prayers for all who need them.

Took my chickies outside, they had so much fun!! For some reason they loved my grandson's plastic slide.

Michelle

That's just darling!!! Not many people have a play set, complete with slide, for their chickens.

I have the book, but I LOVE charts! Saved it and will print it off for a quick reference guide. Thank you, TDubya!

Hi my name is Carolyn and I'm a CHICK-A-HOLIC! and you ladies are not helping at all. The other day someone was talking about getting turkey keets and that started me wanting some turkeys and now Lindz with your announcement of chicks all I can think about is going to TSC and checking for good deals on chicks. I have 30 some odd chicks at home now the last thing I need is more chicks. I came here for support and all I get is enablers. Lol All joking aside Lindz I'm glad for you .50 a piece is a really good deal for pullets.

I too am praying for each one of you. Each of our lives is like a huge puzzle and while we are only able to see a piece at a time, God sees the whole puzzle with each piece neatly fitted together. He has a plan for each one of our lives all we have to do is surrender to His guiding hand and rely on Him to put each piece where it belongs. May each of you feel His tender love today.

I have been praying for all of you as well...you have no idea how wonderful and an answer to prayer it is to have this fine fellowship of women here on this thread!

I have CARROTS LOVE TOMATOES. great book that is packed with good information.

Years ago I read a couple of books written by Ruth Stout. Her views on composting and mulching changed my gardening methods. Any type of soil can be amended/improved in this manner.

I have that book too and will be dusting it off again for this year's garden. I tried it some years ago with fantastic results!
Well, I went from 32 down to 9! My aunt took the rest of them since they have been wanting to get some.

But, quick question.... She doesn't get paid until tomorrow, and needs to know what she can feed them until then when she can get a bag of chick starter.....

Granny always fed all her chicks just cornmeal. It's cheap, easy and it's much like their regular food and most people have it on hand.

Scrambled eggs. Or boiled eggs that are crushed up really well, shells and all.

I scramble them in the microwave with a bit of milk so I don't have to add any oil. Stirr them up really well so they have an easier time eating the little chunks.

A lot of people like to start their hatchlings with a bit of raw liver, too. I keep thinking I'm going to try some liver sometime, but I'd probably cook it first.

Hey, Y'all!!! Guess what I heard last night????? SPRING PEEPERS!!!!!! My blue birds are back and singing off their territories, spring peepers are here, it was in the 70s yesterday and warm all last night and we are getting a spring rain...warm and breezy!

Happy dance!!!

Cornbread with crushed boiled eggs. They have been feed babies that way before mixes came into existance.

I've got a pond about 200 feet from the house. It's a pretty big one, over an acre. Well I don't know what kind of tree frogs they are but there must be a million of some kind down there! They have been going non-stop, 24 hrs/day for 4-5 days. It is soooo LOUD! Outside it just almost makes your ears ring. When things are just fairly quiet I can hear them from inside the house with the doors and windows closed. It sounds like a spaceship from Star Trek or Lost in Space - constant high pitched roar... ahhhhh!!! I'm excited about spring but dang! I have never heard them like this. This would make a great special effect soundtrack for a movie, a creepy movie. LOL

(Welcome on the chart.)

I LOVE that sound!!! It's the sound of life..ever renewing, ever bouncing back from the harshness of the seasons. If spring arrived and I didn't hear that sound I'd be bereft. Same with the whippoorwills around here...for many years we didn't hear them as the coyotes were hitting the ground dwelling birds pretty badly. I haven't seen a ruffed grouse, nor heard one, since the 80s around here. But, now we are hearing whippoorwills in this area and they herald the beginning of summer for us.

We sit out on our porch of an evening as dusk fades into night and listen for these harbingers of spring and summer and rejoice in our hearts that they are still out there, still ringing in the seasons, still letting us know that life goes on.

Spring peepers in WV before the first of April are indeed a rare and precious thing.

I have memories of standing in the open door of the hay loft listening to spring peepers in the pond in front of the barn n WV. Megan would clap her hands and there would be instant silence. After several seconds one brave little peeper would start calling again. After several calls another one would start calling. Then all of the rest of them would start up again. Peepers could bring such a smile to Megan and I.
