The Front Porch Swing

I KEEP on trying beets every few years and EVERY time, they just taste like dirt to me. I am hoping some day my taste will change since they are sooooooo good for you!

OH Rachael. That is so funny you say that. My Mom always pickled beets when I was a kid. Every night for supper we had meat, potatoes, veggies, a plate with bread and a bowl of pickled beets on the table. If I didn't like what mom served for supper I would fill up on pickled beets and bread with butter. SO 40 years later I think I'll try my hand at pickling some beets, and I did last fall. Pulled them out for the first time for supper one night and my son takes one bite looks at me and says, "they taste like dirt" I took a bite and sure enough they did. I don't remember my moms tasting like that, and I used her recipe. I thought I did some thing wrong. Jen

My goodness! I expected to hit the porch for my iced tea and spend an hour catching up! Everyone's been pretty quiet, I guess.

Ibejaren, I feel so bad for you. I know you're really upset, and I sure understand why. I wish I had some words of wisdom for you, but the truth is I don't know what to say. Would a hug help, maybe a little?

Aww, Leslie...that stinks! Got your .22 handy? I'd sure be willing to pop a shot or two off at him!

Are you ready for the great unveiling? Well, TADA:

The people door, almost finished.

People door tanding open while Ken devises the tunnel.

And the "tunnel" from the pop door into the run. It looks open, but as you can see Ken's screwdriver/drill is sitting on top of the chicken wire which is covered with hardware cloth.

You can't see that almost all of the hardware cloth is down around the coop and most of the run - still need to put it around the "front", the door, and the tunnel. And no batter boards yet, but they are cut. Just had time to pick up tools and scraps before the wind started howling and rainddrops started falling. So we're taking tomorrow off, since we've got snow in the forecast. But I'm pretty doggone pleased with it. Ken's tunnel is genius! I couldn't figure out how to accomplish it, and he just cobbled it together! It's strong and stable, and open at the top so I'm pretty sure the girls (and Charlie) will take to it much better than they would have liked my idea of a totally enclosed box.
Love the door! In fact, the whole run is fabulous!

I'd love both hot wire fencing and barking guard dogs to tear critters apart.

Gust is a companion animal ... he is great at that. He knew something was happening outside, but as soon as we ran out there he started eating chicken poop instead of barking.
Bwhaahahah.......

My late dog rosie.... Wuvved Chicken poop Perfume.... Dabbed behind the ear in a very thorough way.... Espeically the realllllllllllly stinky stuff.

Oh, I just love beets....but only the ones I grow and freeze! Canned or pickled? Not this Porchie!! Funny, when I was growing up Ma had one clear glass bowl - only one. She'd mash up a "mess-a-beets" and mound them up in that pretty bowl, with a drizzle of melted butter, made and served exactly like mashed potatoes. Oh, how yummy they were with lots of salt and pepper and that melted butter! And it looked so pretty on the table, too!

Fast forward about 20 years. We were invited to a friend's house for supper. Nothing fancy, we'd been working on his yard all day resodding it, so it was more of a "family sitting down as usual"
meal,my favorite kind! In one of those stainless steel bowls was a "mess-a-beets". They were just the globes, boiled up whole and put in the bowl. I hadn't had beets since I left home, so my mouth was watering. I took one, mashed it up, put a little butter and salt and pepper on it and I thought I'd died and gone to heaven! I just looked at Ken, who was eating his beets with equal gusto, and I said, "I didn't know you liked beets!"

With a little red juice dribbling down his chin he replied, "Well, you never asked!" Oh, yeah.

We won't be planting a garden this year, but one of the producers I buy from at the Farmer's Market grows the best beets, and picks them at exactly the right time....so just about the time we finish up the last of the freezer bags full of beets it will be time to replenish. My favorite veggie by far!
