The Front Porch Swing

Bunnies doing fine so far. I know they are extremely hard to keep alive. I have done it before though, and also raised a jack rabbit to maturity.
I'll give them a few days before I get my heart set on them living, even then they might die in a few months. They are HARD to keep going.
They weren't injured, I grabbed them before the dogs.
Probably ill legal here too but out here in OKIE land it don't seem anyone cares, they are more interested in you helping the animals than trying to hassle you.

Laura loved the egg!!!!

I found a baby deer once and call a certified wildlife person to take care of it and with out even asking me anything about the deer she tore into me about how having it was illegal and that if I had left it alone it's mom would have come back. To which I responded, kind of hard since it's mom was dead on the side of the road and hung up. Then called another one that was a LOT nicer and passed him off to her. Of course keeping a deer is a little different than keeping bunnies, LOL!!!

That is good to hear! Would love to hear updates.

Lazy day today....as Dad used to say, "Doing nuthin' is hard work 'cuz you can't stop to rest!" So I thought I'd tell a story.

Now, before I even start, this is not meant to be a political statement. I leave that to my columns and out of social forums, both online and face to face. Stay with me, and you'll see what I mean.

Before Jenny had to quit work to meet all of Kendra's needs, I was the care provider for Kendra, Katiebug and Evan while their moms worked nights. One night for some reason I just had Evan while Tam was at work. He was only seven at the time. Now, this old trailer is none too large to begin with, but looking around I noticed that the walls seemed to bulging outward. (How can one tiny baby and two little kids take up so much space with their stuff? LOL)

Anyway, I turned to Evan and asked him, "Where should I put the Christmas tree this year? I don't see any room for one."

He marched around the room scoping things out, and finally came to the conclusion that if I'd put the couch, ottoman, and tables outside on the deck, there'd be plenty of room. That should be fine – I guess we can all sit on the floor. "Oh, Evan, I can't do that! I'm too old to sit on the floor. <sigh> Maybe we should just skip the tree for this year," I teased.

His eyes grew big as saucers. "Gramma, you HAFTA have a tree. If you don't, there won't be any Christmas spirit in here." I just chuckled.

"Evan, you know that the Christmas spirit is way more than a tree."

"But Gramma! Oh, I guess you're old and you just don't understand. If there's no tree and no Christmas spirit in your house, then part of Christmas spirit isn't on Earth anymore and if there's no Christmas spirit on Earth, then there will be fighting and everybody will get hurt and sick and die." He stopped to draw a breath and I swear he looked like an owl with those big eyes and his glasses bobbing up and down. "If that happens, it would be the end of the WHOLE world, and NOBODY would ever be happy again." A pause for a breath and then, "Because they can't be happy if they are all dead from no Christmas spirit."

I was trying so hard not to laugh, because he looked so serious and worried. "Evan, I think you're making that Christmas tree a little too important. Do you really think that if all that happened it would be my fault for not having a tree?"

"Well, no Gramma, it's President Bush's fault. President Obama said so." That was it - if I'd have held in the laughter any longer I think I'd have burst. Um, maybe I need to turn off the news when he's here.

Wow that is really cool!!!!

Laura, that is really beautiful!

@Ibejaran... that egg is pretty.

That's not your usual decorator egg. That's art!

Thank you all! I've got some stuff competition, so we'll see how well this egg is received. I'm hoping the colors are what will draw people in. Most people are doing intricate patterns or carved eggs. Nothing wrong with that, but I'm just more skilled with mixing paints and creating a cohesive work. Hopefully it gives me some sort of advantage!

It's illegal in Texas to keep wildlife-unless you have a special license. Not sure about other states-

While I'm not one to purposely break the law, I also recognize that my local wildlife rehabilitation center gets tons of calls a day and they can't take in every animal. Helping out with smaller animals that aren't necessarily the most difficult to raise helps ease the strain on those facilities. Asking for advice from those centers and asking if it's a possibility to try and raise those animals yourself can help.

Can you submit more than one? If yes you really should. Hope you don't mind me posting these here

Thank you! Updates in those bunnies would be really cool. I've had decent luck raising bunnies before, I hadn't realized they were harder to keep alive. Maybe I've just gotten lucky, haha! I'll be honest, I always find it easier to raise baby birds. Mammals are fine and cute, but the birdies are just super special to raise, especially when they learn to fly to you and listen out for your whistling.

Okay, I wanna know what you're feeding those chickens to get those beautiful eggs!

I'm just kidding - oh, those hand painted eggs are just gorgeous! I'm so impressed!

We're having a beef roast cooked on the smoker I think. That will depend on the weather, though. Kenny cooks outside all year long...sometime I look out of my kitchen window and I see him over on his deck bundled up in his heavy clothes and coveralls, happily flipping burgers or turning steaks while it's snowing! I'm not as hardy as he is!
