The Front Porch Swing

My dads first computer stored info on an Audio Cassette drive. I forget what kind it had a green screen and an intergal keyboard.

My first computer was an 8088 built myself.... No hard drive but .... drummm rolll It had TWO 5.25 inch floppy drives..... Woo hoo I could run the Software on one AND store the file on the other..... Strictly DOS.

My second computer was a retired CAD demo computer.... No hard drive I bought a 20 meg hard drive from a coworker.... Woo Hoo now I could run DOS from the hard drive. I got really good at creating Autoexec files for specific programs that run on that one. At the time Autocad came on three or four 5.25 floppy disks.

I bet you lost a LOT of people about paragraph 3

Guy in my dorm (1976) built his computer from parts. Definitely the only way to get one at the time.

Hard drive? I have no hard drive

. Boots fast as a wink. But then I don't have the storage requirements you do. If I did, I could get a terabyte external.

Probably the best video on it that I have seen to date.

This is the guy from Metzer farms.

OK, that is very cool. Too bad chickens are harder, at least according to the video.

Fifty cents says shes a shee... No hackle feathers. The fine feathers roos get on their necks. The green feathers may just be a genetic throw back. even if shes not a sex link I dont think you gota boy there.

I think I might take the other side of the 50 cents. Seems early for hackles and lots of comb for the age. Let us know who "wins".

It's past time for me to do something about those winter fluffies! My 8 year old granddaughter Katie climbed up on my lap, rested her sweet head on my shoulder and said, "Oh, Gramma! Your fat is so soft."

.....
Good thing Lisa warned us not to be drinking while reading a Blooie story!

Yes, I love them too. My 1st love is the Barred, but the Whites are 2nd--just so "chicken" looking. I love all the Rocks really. Your Roo is an outstanding bird--I can only dream and imagine...

Well, they are all babies. The SP Rocks are 3 weeks old, the Columbian 1 week old and the Barred on lockdown. I have fantasies of posting regal males and females 10 months from now, LOL. All are doing so well--and Bee, they eat so much. I read a post of Fred's stating the Rocks ate heartily and boy was he right. I can post baby chick pics I suppose tomorrow, might be kinda fun to look back in 10-12 months.

Mine don't...when Fred told me that I was shocked. One of the reasons I love my WRs so much is that they don't eat as much as the other breeds I've had but still maintain good weight and density. Feed thrift is one of the things I like in a bird, so when folks tell me their WRs eat a lot I'm always surprised....mine do not. Maybe it's because mine forage so well that they don't put the hurts on me at the feeder but they are not big eaters for me and maintain good condition on practically nothing..and forage. BRs are a little more hungry than the WRs and will consume more feed and lay less, but that' just hatchery stock and it may be different with real BRs.

Quote: We shall see. You have such great forage for your chickens--wish I had a quarter of your space! Mine free-range on 1/2 acre and I've planted a nice little alfalfa field for them but not a natural free range like you have although I allow them in my large garden (yup, I do), I have lots of berry bushes, fruit trees, cover, bugs, etc for them. . My Silver Penciled are my biggest chow hounds so far. I just adore these Rocks--I give them sprouted wheat grass every day for a treat and the little 4 day old Columbians tore into them like nobody's business!

Today at lunch one of Dad's friends came in when I was trying to explain to Dad how to eat. She asked me what was set out on the counter where we eat ... a fresh egg custard. I tell her it just has eggs, milk, a bit of sugar and real vanilla bean. She asks for a taste -- then digs through the dish and heads to the trash as she thinks it has "ash" in it. I say that's the vanilla bean. She doesn't believe me and insists she's going to throw it away. Gust gave her the stink eye, so I took the bowl from her and gave it to him.

Then I tell Dad about the soup -- a roasted vegetable soup base he got from a local ag industry buddy to which I added a huge amount of turkey breast for a well-rounded "local" meal. Dad's friend starts telling me how "dirty" turkey meat is ... how studies prove that ... how she's stopped eating it. I explain that's industrial poultry, processed in huge batches. I told her how it is legal to butcher poultry on your farm without inspection or processing regulations and sell it to people as food ... the government has figured out that's safe. Meanwhile, industrial processing plants are so risky they have all kinds of regulations and procedures and teams of in-house inspectors.

I told her to warn me when she comes over again so I can hide all the food. She just laughed.

That does make a difference, to be sure. It's chicken heaven here and there is no lack of things to eat for a varied diet. Right now everyone is looking a little rangy as they come off of winter sloth and grain based feeds and are getting exercise looking for meals. It will all even out later and they will shine like a new penny but this is the time of year when they look their worst as they hit the dusting sites heavy, lose fat and lay much. Most of my white birds are wearing a black drip strip down their backsides from the high sugar content in the new grass and the loose vents of daily laying...they show it worse than the colored birds.

Oh my word! You are much nicer than I would have been! I would have just told her that she hadn't been invited to lunch, and certainly hadn't been invited to toss and/or critique what I was serving, and she could wait outside until we were finished eating if our food bothered her that much! But then, I ain't always the nicest person in the world, so don't go by me!

I would have said more but Dad yanked my leash. It wouldn't have been a fair fight anyway. Words are my thing, lots of brown lip liner is hers.
