The Front Porch Swing

NW La checking in as ok. Nasty night but no tornadoes in our direct area. It's still around and will be ongoing all day I think. Gson AJ, went extremely afraid at 3 AM. Aimee got up with him and calmed him down. Horrible at the news of all the deaths. Anyone else checked in? Praying.

Hello all!

Jumping in from Indiana! I've followed a couple of Bee's threads now but not commented much. My only internet access is my phone so most of my posts tend to be short. Anywho this seems to be such a friendly bunch I decided to say hi!

And I felt the need to weigh in on this :) cows are my favorite! I have a Holstein and 2 Brown Swiss we are raising for beef right now.
OOHH! I have wanted to get some scottish highlanders! We had a friend who had a bull he wanted to breed with his black angus (I think). I've researched them and love them.  Another breed I love is the, Oh! just had a brain freeze and can't think of the name :he , they look like oreo cookies, black with white band around middle.  It might come to me in the middle of the night!! :D Hope everything goes well tomorrow.

Belted Galloways which tend to be used for beef these days or...
Dutch banded or something?

Dutch Belts which have been breed more for dairy qualities. :)

Hope you all are having nicer weather than we are here today!

The highland lassies are here, or at least one of them is. The other one was very agitated from a run in with the bull over breakfast then being loaded in the trailer and taken on a long bumpy ride. Her owner pulled the trailer in our pasture, not close to the paddock that we wanted them in for a few days, then opened the door and forced them out. She may be about to calve for the first time and is really skittish. She took off at a run and cleared the fence. He could have let them come out on their own because I bought the trailer too. He only charged us for the one and we can pay him for the other when we get her back. A neighbor saw her come up on the road then turn and go back into the field next to ours so hubby is out walking the woods with a bucket of grain. I guess I won't sleep much tonight if she hasn't come back by bedtime. Of course it is raining and cold again. Just the best weather for searching for a lost cow!

Welcome to The Front Porch! Would you like some Sweet Tea or Unsweet? We have mint and lemons to go in it also. All the desserts for some reason are over by Miss Bee. We have plenty of seating. You can sit on the porch railing, steps, buckets, hay bale, rocking chairs, and of course, the swings. Pop in whenever. We love good stories.

What part of Indiana are you from? I am from S. Indiana area but now live in Texas.

Lisa :)

Oh no rrrmamma! Yep those critters can jump. Amazing how they can get that much weight that far off the ground and so quick. Don't worry, she will come looking for something to eat and a familiar buddy.

That's a bad situation...my sister looked for a Highland bull for months after an episode like that. He got away from her on my sister's farm and went way back in some scrub land to live wild. They took tranq guns out there on numerous occasions, tried to get him to come to grain, they tried dogs, etc. They were finally able to find him again in a couple of months and corner him with a group of people. By then he was as wild as a deer and twice as wary....it was a miracle they got him back. After that he was never really willing to stay in the fences and they finally sent him to slaughter.

I'm sure a cow with a calf or soon to be calf will be easier to get back into fences...this was a young bull, light on his feet and small.

Let us know when you get her back!

I have a Scottish highlander breeder near me, and I contacted him about a heifer, but he has sold all he wants to this year. He does have a yearling steer for sale, so we are thinking about buying one to beef later in the year and getting a heifer next year. I love their meat!!
