The Front Porch Swing

Yay! I think I finally got a feed recipe from my feed mill that will work as an All Purpose Feed for all the birds in our flock. It's got extra amounts of some nutrients to cover the ducks and the younger birds and the breeders, and less calcium (we'll continue to offer oyster shell on the side).

It will be custom milled by a small local independent mill and locally sourced as much as possible. It is GMO-Free, it is Corn-Free, it is Soy-Free, it is Canola-Free, it is Camolina-Free. Some of those "free" requests come from my customer base, some come from my own personal preferences. It is pelleted for minimal waste and maximum nutrition. It is really just what I wanted. Yay!

But I have a decision to make. She gave me two options, one for a formula with 2x as much fish meal as the other (but more expensive), and the other with just a hint of fish meal (but a little less expensive). We know the birds do better with more animal protein, and neither recipe has enough of the fish meal to show up as a taste in the eggs or meat.

The less-expensive formula is comparable to what we've been paying per bag, the other is about $1 more per bag, but will probably save me sneaking cat kibble into my FF.

Which would you choose?

Great Leslie. That feed sounds good. I wish I had some of that recipe around here. I would go with the cheaper feed then add a little whole flax seed to up the protein level and flax is a great selling point. I feed mine about 5% whole flax and about 10% alfalfa pellets to enhance the omega 3 AND 6's. The alfalfa makes the yolks really orange.

Your chick looks a lot like an Ancona chick.

Well, moved the chickens into the big kid coop finally.

Then, last night was thrown for a loop.

An elderly man from my church recently passed away. His life was devoted to breeding, raising, training, and showing American Quarter Horses. A few years back, him and his wife sold many of the horses they had and got out of showing, but still owned a few of them. Well, when he passed away (She's quite elderly too.) she decided to sell the remaining horses and also sell most of her property in the coming weeks. My Grandpa was talking to her last night at church (I've been ill since Sunday and haven't been able to go.), asking how she is and how she's making it. She shocked my Grandpa by telling him that she had an 11 year old sorrel AQHA show horse and needed to find him a new home, and she wanted to know if it was alright if she gave him to me. My Grandpa said that he couldn't just take him for free, and she did accept payment for the horse, but it was significantly less than the horse's worth. I am beyond excited, but also understanding that I'm about to take on a serious responsibility. This horse was the man's personal horse and apparently misses him, from what she said. I hope that I can fill that void. He's trained in halter showmanship, western horsemanship, and western pleasure. I am not for sure if I will ever show him, but I do know that he needs to be worked with and I will try my best to be a good companion to him. We're heading out this evening (She lives rather rural.) to go see him for the first time. I know what I've said above and that he's sorrel in coloring. He's a gelding. Not sure on height or current weight or anything else really. She's planning on signing the horse over into my name. I haven't really talked to anyone about this, but I thought I would let the news out here first.

I am feeling incredibly blessed, but also incredibly overwhelmed. Please remember me in your thoughts and prayers. We have lots to do to prepare for his arrival! And now, I have a horse, chickens, and a garden to care for. Overwhelmed, but excited! Will try to post photos when I can!

Somewhat of an upgrade, I hope he's thinking.

The swan is gorgeous! How come the only stray birds that ever end up on my property are starlings and grackles? Sheesh, I ain't living right or something. Well I do have my goldfinches, and my house finches, and my pine siskins, and my Cassin's finches, and my red polls, and of course the hummingbirds my property is famous for.....um, never mind. I'm fine. LOL

I wish every town had such a thing as this! Getting a town to agree on such a plan of action and then having them delegate people to implement it is nothing short of a miracle! Wish I could live near a town like that.

It really isn't a matter of the town "delegating" anyone to do the cleanup on Saturday. It's all volunteer, and we always have tons of people turning out to help.

I know one thing - that horse would not be yours if she didn't feel that she could depend on you to see to his needs and love him. Everything after that trust is gravy.

Okay, break is over. Time to get back out there. I wish I knew how to post a video besides youtube.....Kendra stood at my kitchen cabinet yesterday for over 3 minutes (and I didn't start timing until I finally went "DUH" and started recording) just opening and shutting the cabinet door and giggling. No one was holding her up, no mechanical support - she just stood there all alone on her two chubby little legs. Jenny says since she figured out walking in the gait trainer she's not one bit content to be down on the floor anymore.

I think is the beginning of a beautiful friendship (as they say at the end of Casablanca). I'm sure the horse will bond with you just as much as he did with his previous owner. Horses are like that. They like the bond.

do yourself a favor find out who the horse's trainer is and get some lessons. Showmanship and halter are kind of intense Get some training for yourself.... Western Pleasure too. If you can find out what bit he uses... VERY important. Even if you are an experienced horse woman I have no idea.... but having a second set of eyes and insight to your new horses personality is one thing I always recommend

Blooie, he didn't actually "stray" to be quite accurate. My neighbour found him in the ditch in the middle of a freezing winter night, thought he had been hit by a car. But he wasn't. He was easy to catch. I think he had just given up.

His indoor space is in between two large chicken coops. I think he likes the chickens. I suspect he has a favourite! I think he has been cured by "chicken therapy" like so many of us.

MichelBeth... That is great!! Congrats!! That man must have really liked you (wife too!). You have been blessed.

Thank you for all of the encouragement ya'll! I am certainly blessed, and feel very lucky. I have been lucky to work with many horses throughout my life, also have helped teaching riding skills to those with special needs (One of the best jobs I EVER had.), but have never "taken the plunge", so to speak, of owning my own. I really can't wait!
