The Front Porch Swing

Bruce,
Sorry to hear that the previous owners hid stuff from you, it burns me up when people do that.

From the pictures, it looks like you are going to have a beautiful place when you are done with the remodel.
Our previous place was a modular and had a couple of major problems that we didn't find out abut until there were major problems - like the leaking water heater which rotted out the floor of the hallway and 1/2 bath. The guy we bought that place from didn't know about it leaking though, so there was no attempt at fraud. He felt really bad when he heard we had to rebuild the floor and bathroom. He was our neighbor and we were/are great friends.

Interesting thing happened today for DH. A couple pulled into the driveway at the new place and offered to buy it!
lol.png
They live in Alaska, but used to live in the area. They have 20 grandchildren and 18 of them live in Wisconsin, so they decided to move back. They said they had looked at the place a few years ago and were really shocked/disappointed to find out that we bought it just a month ago. They couldn't believe that they never even saw the listing. Unfortunately, they were not interested in our place in Wyoming ... lol

We need to find the retailer who sells those Aga cookers. DH thinks one of the heating elements is bad in the "multi-oven" (it has more than one element) and one of the oven lights is burnt out. One issue with the stove is that it is wider than normal, so we are going to have to special order a range hood when we do the remodel.

I try to grow organic as much as I can, when I garden that is. But, I will admit to using chemicals occasionally when I have a pest or disease that I cannot control organically.

Me too...if only to cast it at His feet. I just want to have something that shows my love for Him and how deeply it runs. I will gladly wash His feet with my tears on that day and for an eternity of days.

I KNEW I loved you to pieces for some reason!!! ME EITHER!!!

How many times have you heard this one? "Well, if you don't vote, you can't complain about anything!" Since I'm not a complainer, and it seems that some vote merely so they can earn the right to complain, it works out fine for me.

Hear! Hear!!!! ME neither!

Well until lately where here in Canada it seems that all our rights and freedoms are being removed bit by it y our current prime minister. It's bad enough that even I have started to prick my ears!

Funny how some of us have so many similarities on this thread and a few others.....sort of like metal filings and magnets, aren't we? We just tend to congregate and frequent the same types of threads.

I don't worry about the government and how they are milling around...they are such small potatoes. I've read The Book and I know how it all ends and the rest of what happens between then and now has been described, so I'm just marking time, watching the times and the seasons of the world, working with my hands, praying for the lost and waiting upon the Lord.....

And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Ok, prayer warriors, here's my need. My husband is scheduled for surgery tomorrow, but it has to be delayed because he has caught the cold that has run through my entire family. So, my request is this: That the surgery will be rescheduled in a timely manner, that his health and surgery date will be in compliance with each other, and that his surgery will go well with a good outcome (removal of a bony cyst from his back. He's been having nerve impingement pain since last October)

On the chicken front: My big girls are integrated with the littles, except for sharing perch space in their loft coop... so the littles have to sleep on newly installed perches in the outer part of their coop. What a ruckus they made when bedding down last night! One little RCBL keeps squeezing through the (uncharged) electronet fence. I have it ready to hook up the battery today as soon as i get a few sagging places tightened up so the wires aren't on the ground. The poor little girl is in for a big surprise.

We went to an "adult game day" yesterday. Now, before you get going with wild imaginings of what kind of "adult games" I might have been playing in mixed company, let me put your minds at ease. First, we drove to the address we were given, which took a bit of time, b/c hubby had the wrong town, but right street and number. So, after we got there, we found lots of cars, but nobody home. Found a sign, prompting us to follow that sign to the next sign... and so on... until we ran out of signs, and were left at the end of a dirt road with a "cattle path" leading off into the woods. So, hubby drove down the cattle path, through the woods, over hill and dale, around rocks and trees, through mud pits, until the woods opened up into a beautiful rolling field. The "adult games" were in full swing: Barbecue grill emanating incredible smells, 2 long tables laden with all sorts of delectables, kids joining in the fun, and lots of participants in the "adult games" There was a rifle range, skeet shooting, and archery. Our church congregration was well represented by this group! Come to find out, our pastor is a pretty good shot! Quite a few women and teen girls participating as well!

Belgian endive is wonderful. I can never eat enough of that... sadly, not what I grew. I grew this:
Guess it's also known as escarole. I mash it into potatoes with onions and bacon and a dash of vinegar.. a bit too hardy for 80-90 degree days. I suppose I could cut it, wash it and freeze it.... My mom used to boil the stuff with a little corn starch to thicken but BLEGH.

I bet it won't freeze. Eat the heck out of it. (lettuce) and give a bunch to the chickens. I'm not sure about other uses.

Wow! I am away one weekend and I miss over a hundred posts!? I am not even going to attempt to catch up on old topics!!

Had a busy weekend here. Barn roof is almost completely replaced. T-ball game Saturday morning--- I love to watch that little guy play. Then, because I was not going to chase one of those crazy leghorn cockerels through the brush at dusk while it is pouring down rain again, I put together a run for the young ones. They are happy. I am happy.

My goal on Sunday was to get the broody set up with her little efficiency apartment and some eggs. I had been collecting the EE eggs and a couple from my NH. I have no clue if she will be a good momma or not, and no clue on whether the eggs are fertile, but I guess we shall see. I tossed together a little cage and fit it to the end of her preferred nest in a wooded crate. I think it turned out pretty good for using scrap supplies and NO tape measure! I mean, it only really has to last 21 days, right? When I hauled it into the coop she took off out the door for a little stretch… or so I thought. Once I got it all situated, eggs included, she was nowhere in sight. I had a brief moment of panic as well as thoughts from the Dr. Seuss book "Horton Hatches the Egg." I felt like she hit the door running with nothing but a look over her shoulder to tell me "I'm outta here, the nest is all yours!" She returned full of dirt (ah, she must have had an appointment at the Under the Shed Day Spa). After she filled up on food I ushered her into her new home. She looked around a bit confused before she saw the eggs and the switch flipped. She is happily sitting on 6 EE eggs, two NH eggs, and two leghorn eggs (brown or white, nobody knows) all mixed with a SLW Roo. We shall see if this actually happens!!

Pics to be added by phone in two seconds-- I took them before I put food, water, or hen in the box.

In other news, and sort of related to a discussion earlier about culling or antibiotics or something? Forgive me if the convo never happened… there was a lot to read!! I am sitting on the very edge of my first cull, and so torn about it. When I started my chicken plans almost a year ago I decided that I will never use antibiotics. If a chicken gets hurt beyond recovery, they get culled. If they are hurt and have a chance, they are cleaned up, maybe some blue kote, and given the option to survive. If they survive, awesome, if they go downhill, cull. This worked well for Lucky who survived a hawk attack just after Christmas. You would never know she had a big gouge taken out of the back of her head. Anyhow, Chica, my FAVORITE hen has a swollen eye. I am not going to mess with disease, at all. My problem here is that I am not certain it is disease I am dealing with… so I am tiptoeing on the edge waiting for a clear sign… her eye is clear, no oozing, bubbling, anything. No nasal drainage. No sneezing, coughing, rattling. She ranges normally with the rest of the flock. I think it has gone down some the past day. It is soft to the touch, not firm. Am I crazy? I guess I am holding out hope that she just got pecked or poked it on something. Her eyeball looks just fine. I tried to separate myself from them, they are just livestock, fragile in a lot of ways, but Chica… she lays a large egg 6 days a week. She is friendly-- not overly so that it is annoying, but if you need to catch her it is not a problem. I guess I am just waiting for one little sign that points me in either direction. Sorry for rambling, had to get that out.

Anyhow, I hope everyone has a great week! Tball again tonight!!

Nice efficiency apartment! Like the Under the Shed spa too! Hope Chica just got a bug bite or something which will clear up naturally. I have a ewe often gets a moony eye. Sometimes I go to the effort to catch her and put eye drops in, sometimes I just watch it, seems to clear up in a day or two either way.

I heard someplace, and I've been testing it the last year, that if you check the dew first thing in the morning it tells you if it will rain or not. Dew = no rain. No dew = rain. Has any once else noticed this or knows the science behind it? I've been finding it quite accurate.

Prayers for your husband that he gets well soon and everything goes smoothly in surgery and he has a speedy recovery!

That game day sounds like so much fun!! Wish I could find something like that here!!

Thank you! I really am leaning toward injury. Where would I be without my little lawnmower (she eats grass like nobody's business). I just struggle with the fine line between injury and illness and second guessing myself because she is not clearly saying that she is sick.

Never heard of the dew thing--- it was dewy out this morning, dripping off the teeth on the grape leaves again. It is not supposed to rain today. It is supposed to rain (60%) tomorrow, so I will check when I let the girls out in the morning (that is, if it is not already raining

On our way to spend the day in Yellowstone! Wishing you all a day filled with peace, joy and the love of the Good Lord.
How fun!! Can I request some pictures?? I want to go to Yellowstone SO bad! It is a bit too far for this summer, though. We will only make it as far as Rocky Mountain NP and Arches NP in Utah before heading south to the four corners and Mesa Verde and back home. Maybe in about two years we will be ready to press further west and include WY, MT, and maybe (fingers crossed) the Pacific NW. I love exploring all our country has to offer!
