The Front Porch Swing

Howdy ya'll ! Hope everyone is having a blessed day today ! Weather here has been absolutely beautiful with temps in the high 70's... Praise The Lord for sunny summer weather, green lush grass and the beauty of nature !

Got the coop addition just about complete and The Littles are all moved in.

Need to finish the remainder of trim around the windows and tighten things up as well as add some corner trim and paint. The rectangular area below the window is where the nest boxes will go; will be planning to construct those this weekend, paint them and hopefully have them installed by next week.

Need to add a couple more roosts, adult feeder and waterer and we'll be good to go. I'm hoping out of these 25 chicks that I get at least 15 pullets ... Fingers crossed !

P.S. Bee, I will be adding my photos to the Coop Tweaking thread once complete

Quote: I used to go to a church filled with those. They felt like one is blessed by riches due to their own righteousness and obedience to God. I asked them, "What does that say for poor people? The disciples had only one change of clothing and no home to call their own, guess they didn't deserve riches?"

Folks go a little crazy when money walks into the door....

I agree. But folks seem to gain security from a supposed status they have worked towards and they seem to feel threatened if the status no longer has meaning. In the nursing field the different levels of education and title are very much stressed, boundaries are laid down and no one likes those beneath them in this so called status to seem to have equal footing~be it in pay or respect. That's one reason nursing assistants are treated like dirt in most places they work, little more than slaves to the nursing staff.

Well, put 6 maran eggs under my broody last night! I should have 1-2 more, haven't checked yet, to put under her. Plus found another broody in the barn this weekend. We thought something happened to her, as we come up 3 short the last couple of weeks. There is another clutch of eggs with 14. But no hen. So something has gotten the other 2. But 2 broodies!!

The one we put the maran eggs under has been broody for about 4 weeks, so I hope she stays for another 3 weeks. Is that possible?

Do you mean like being slightly egg bound? That does make sense - sort of!

Wow, I wonder if the eggs had been incubated if they would have hatched? my mind never stops......

The picture of the first egg wasn't clear to me..... was that also a developing chick??

No I don't think it had anything to do with being eggbound. I guess those chicks were just hanging out inside of her growing and as soon as her eggs hatched she started laying and laid these. She hasn't laid any more. I hope that's the end of it. I believe they are about 3 weeks along developed, not sure. Freaky! Sure made me scratch my head and wonder how in the world it happened. I can see an egg getting lost and sat on a while and end up like that. But LAID like that??? Plumb freaky! Me too, made me wonder if one could be laid ready to hatch. Or shoot, maybe they can even just give birth to a chick with no egg! This makes me believe about anything is possible. (In the second pic, see the head at the top and the legs/feet at the bottom?)

The internal broody thing is weirdly fascinating! Who knew!!!

We got an extra egg in the breeding pen today. Dad said to sell it. I said I want to look inside. Now I'm especially glad I've got that instinct!

Me too!! I am so glad I didn't sell those eggs!! It sure made me have second thoughts about selling eggs to people. I think I am going to get or make a good candler and start checking them all.

We picked up Madi's pup today. The one her mom bought for her without any input from Madi. At first she did not even want to go get it. Once we got to the shelter she rushed in ahead of me and went to the cages. She was standing in front of a cage of one of the dogs we had decided against. I took her out to the desk and asked the staff where the dog was that we adopted. It was in a separate holding pen because it had been neutered this morning. When she saw it she got her special little Madi smile and said he was cute. They are now sleeping together in her room. The pup will go home with her when she goes. She finished all her classwork for the week today so we can go do something fun I hope. I have an eye doctor's appointment tomorrow afternoon to see if my cataracts are ready for surgery. I hope so, I can barely drive anymore and seeing the screen is getting more and more difficult. Maybe on Wednesday

She isn't giving me clues about what she would like to do, but the pool is open at our local High School for the summer. If I can find a bathing suit to wear we might try that. I am trying to think of places to take her where she will meet other young people, but I did not live here when I had kids and everything is so far away. I need some ideas.. Those of you with teens, where do your kids hang out? Her sister will be here Friday so I won't feel like I have to hang around the pool or park with them all the time. It has to be hard for her as she always had a group of people around her. I wouldn't consider most of them really friends after the trouble they got her into. I know she is lonely, but we keep trying Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. I am tired again tonight. Still haven't recovered from the weekend. Off to bed soon.

Okay friends, went to collect maran eggs and none! The first time in 2-3 weeks without an egg from them. Went out to check the broody and she moved to another box and wasn't setting on the maran eggs!!

And not only that, but 1 was broken!

So I brought the eggs in. I have been holding the first egg for 5 days, today is the sixth day. Should I start over, or can I put these in the bator. If I can put them in the bator, I will have to get it started and make sure it is set correctly, which will take until tomorrow evening. Will they be ok? I was going to let the marans out of the breeding pen tomorrow, but I will have to wait a few days to get more eggs. Any suggestions, please? I will post on the hatching thread also. I need to decide quickly.

Mamma hen and her new brood
Awww!! We have lost 3 hens in the last couple of weeks, well 2 really, as this past saturday, I was getting in my car and saw something fly from the back of the barn. I looked and it was one of the silver spangled hamburgs I thought was gone. She has been missing for almost 2 weeks. Come to find out she has a little nest in cozy little bin in the barn!!!! She just fits in it and is about 3 feet off the floor. It is dark, so when you look for her you can't even see her. So, all of that to say this, I HOPE TO HAVE SOME OF THESE SOON!!! Sooo Cute. Is the hen a speckled sussex?
Yes she is a speckled sussex hen. I have 4 ss hens and 1 ss ROOSTER (yes I said that) and 1 Light Brown leghorn hen. I gave her 9 eggs 6 ss and 3 ss/light br.leg. 2 SS eggs got broke and 2 were clears so ended up with 2 ss and 3 ss/leghorn. Please post pics when the hatch love seeing them out on the grass. I can't quit watching mama and chicks TV.
