The Front Porch Swing

OMG! HOW did she manage that? ???? If that happened to me I would NOT be hungry any more!

Yeah that was definitely upchuck worthy. hahaha I have a pretty strong stomach so my eggs were still good after I broke those three. I didn't tell or show mom though! LOL ...Doggit! That would have got me out of having to cook eggs EVERY MORNING at least for a while. LOL

I was talking to Bee and BCMaraniac about it. BCM said that she must have had fertilized eggs in her when she went broody. Then she stopped laying and the chicks just kept growing inside of her. I just hope my hen is okay. She's my favorite. And I am SO GLAD I didn't put those eggs in a carton and sell them to anybody!!!!!

My birthday is three days after Christmas, so might just ask my husband to get me one this year. It would have to be a joint gift, just to much money to be just one gift. Last year we bought a new couch (first new ferniture we ever bought!) for Christmas. We had the money in savings, as I refuse to use a credit card for anything other then emergencys, but I still ha a really hard time with buying something for that much. But it's comfortable and used often and the last two couches were used and didn't want to do that thins time because I wanted leather so it would be easy to clean.

We are Christmas babies, well almost! My bday is 4 days after!

I was having an online conversation today about the minimum wage. Seattle just raised it to $15, and of course there is backlash. "Kids don't deserve so much." "People who work at McDonalds don't deserve so much." A guy who owns a fancy restaurant is saying his staff doesn't deserve so much because then he won't be able to put as much money toward the growth of his company. But of course it isn't just kids and fast food workers and dish washers at fancy restaurants making minimum wage ... it's a lot of single moms working all kinds of jobs ... many of those jobs in the service industry.

There is a "living wage calculator" site ... how much does someone have to make per hour to not be on public assistance or go into debt to pay for a bare-bones lifestyle? In my county of my state a single woman raising one child would have to make nearly $20/hour to scrape by (child care is expensive!). That presumes she'd be working full time -- so many jobs these days are stuck at part time, but the maximum hours of part time, so the employers can avoid providing benefits like health care and vacation and sick pay. So that single mom might be working 35 hour work weeks 52 weeks of the year. No extra money for vacations, entertainment, or fast food. But that's okay because she doesn't get paid vacation anyway. No sick days for her or her kid either (like full-time workers usually get).

Of course that's not right. But instead of working to reorganize stuff in our society, we tell ourselves the single moms have it coming to them. They got pregnant wrong. They got the wrong education. They deserve to struggle and be sneered at.

One of the woman who was in the conversation with me complained that she deserves to make more money than people working fast food because she worked so hard to go to school that she deserved to get ahead of the people who don't have jobs that require degrees. She said she was a social worker. That got me thinking ... we need social workers to deal with the problems in society that we'd rather not deal with ourselves -- the people who deal with those problems do deserve to be well paid. We don't want to take care of or visit the sick and help them keep up with their chores any more. We don't want to feed each other when we are hungry. We don't make work for people who are between jobs. And so on. We want to pay a little tax and let someone else deal. But if even our social workers don't think the people they are representing are deserving ... or we start complaining about the tax ... how much lower can we go as a society?

Meanwhile I have rich friends. Rich religious friends. Rich religious friend who flaunt their wealth so everyone can see just how righteous and deserving of blessings they are.

I don't like the support we give each other to look down on other people. It feels wrong to me. So very wrong.

Do you mean like being slightly egg bound? That does make sense - sort of!

Wow, I wonder if the eggs had been incubated if they would have hatched? my mind never stops......

The picture of the first egg wasn't clear to me..... was that also a developing chick??

The internal broody thing is weirdly fascinating! Who knew!!!

We got an extra egg in the breeding pen today. Dad said to sell it. I said I want to look inside. Now I'm especially glad I've got that instinct!

Howdy ya'll ! Hope everyone is having a blessed day today ! Weather here has been absolutely beautiful with temps in the high 70's... Praise The Lord for sunny summer weather, green lush grass and the beauty of nature !

Got the coop addition just about complete and The Littles are all moved in.

Need to finish the remainder of trim around the windows and tighten things up as well as add some corner trim and paint. The rectangular area below the window is where the nest boxes will go; will be planning to construct those this weekend, paint them and hopefully have them installed by next week.

Need to add a couple more roosts, adult feeder and waterer and we'll be good to go. I'm hoping out of these 25 chicks that I get at least 15 pullets ... Fingers crossed ! :)

P.S. Bee, I will be adding my photos to the Coop Tweaking thread once complete :D
