The Front Porch Swing

:frow  Hello from somewhere nestled between the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains of Virginia! I also have two boys, ages 6 and almost 4…. who just came inside for a snack after some crazy sprinkler fun! We had to do a test run before the birthday party in a couple weeks. Slip-n-slide is on for tomorrow!! Not sure where I would be without my boys!! Welcome to the porch!

Thanks. Oh I would love to visit your neck of the woods sometime. It's hot here in Arkansas but not as hot as it could be. I just keep telling myself that.

Deb has the scientist son.  My son is a mechanical engineer.  :)

My bad. Getting confused on here. Either way you both should be proud. My oldest is taking an engineering class geared toward elementary students in July. He is very interested in building things, etc.

Lisa :)

It was lovely weather, the food was excellent, the family were their usual selfish, boorish, ungrateful selves, their kids were raging hellions and they all left the mess for their 80 yr old mother and I to clean up....so, things went as they usually do.     The farthest drive was 4 hrs away and that group stayed all night the night before....and that was a real slice of life.  Never again.

Don't know why we expect it to get better each year but each year it gets worse and worse.  Mom says this was the last year.

As you may have gathered, my family are not the Waltons......

We aren't The Waltons, either. I don't think my sister or any of her kids (ages 18, 18 and 20) bothered to even wish Dad Happy Father's Day on Facebook. Dad is the only living grandparent ... I know they know he exists because he'd just been to the twins' HS graduation the week before. I just don't get it.

Not one of my sibs even mentioned Dad at the reunion, though I posted a pic of him right by the tables. The ones living next to his nursing home had no intention of visiting him either.

What it comes down to is that they had good parents but they simply don't care. The world is becoming more and more like that.

Well, our sweet DIL Stephanie is on her way to Cleveland clinic for her first round of evaluations for her lung transplant. It has been a very rough weekend. She has been in the hospital since Wednesday night. Was released yesterday afternoon. She was coughing up blood, had to be put on a breathing machine for a couple of days. Weaned her off of that on saturday so she could come home. They didn't want her to miss her cleveland appointments. She is still feeling very bad and weak. I asked her if she was ready for all of this and she said not really. The first thing they will do is a PFT, pulmonary function test. She hasn't had one for several months, because they are afraid it could cause her lung to collapse again, or now the bleeding to start up. So please pray for her, for strength, for the Drs., for my precious son and their 2 equally precious children, her parents. They had an 18 year old son pass away from cf. It's going to be a long haul, and she is growing weaker quickly.

Blooie! I hope a pray your trip is going the way you dreamed it would! Be safe and have so much fun!
Praying for her the Doctors and staff that will be taking care of her, God to give them wisdom and compassion and all resources needed for her care be available in Jesus's name. Also praying for strength and courage for all your family members at this time.

Raised three boys, who are now out of the house and on their own. It's a job and one has to be ever vigilant. It's a great calling and the world needs more godly men, more so now than ever. I have three good, respectable young men but the traps the devil lays out there for young men are varied and dangerous...they are ever in my prayers.

So true!!

My son Just called.  We expected him home around 3 am but as I expected the project took longer than he expected.

So backing up to Friday.  Dean went to his once a week meeting for students doing data analysis for the astronomy department.  He and about three others are working alongside Justin who is a Grad Student.  They are analyzing data from a satellite that looks for XO planets...  planets circling other stars.

During the meeting the Justin said he had to go to the Laguna Observatory to actually look through the telescope at a single star in that whole project.  The planet is supposed to circle the star every 60 days and last night was it.  It was a do or die mission... LOL.  Up till now they have been looking at Graphs for each star coming from a Radio Telescope satellite named Kepler.

Justin needed help with the Telescope.  So he invited Dean and a couple of others to come with him and be Worker Bees.  So Sunday he was supposed to Pack a bag with food and drinks his own pillow and blanket and  a book or game that didnt run off a computer.  There is internet up there but its a special wifi run by the College and very expensive so they were told "Do NOT go online".  Cell phones dont work up there either.  There is a small barracks For these sessions and a room with bunk beds.

So the Plan was to do a last minute run to the college to hand in his release form.  Then come back home to wait for Mathew to come pick him up.  Justin wanted Dean to help him pump Nitrogen into the telescope which was a two hour process.  So they were going up early to open up the observatory and prep the telescope.  The others would come up later.

While Dean was at the college Doctor Welsh was there talking to Justin and he flipped out when he found out Justin had invited Dean last minute.  Doctor Orosz got Dean on board to get paid for research on another project that hasn't started yet.  During the conversation Dean was handed five more forms to fill out and it all took much longer than he expected.

So they got a late start and left the house about 3:00  Dean said they would be done by 2:00 AM and probably home by 3:00 AM.  I was up till 4:00 am and finally gave up flipped on the porch light so he could see when he got home.  He was soo excited before he left...  Packed and unpacked and packed again....  Its almost eleven now and he is not home yet...  I am excited to hear what he has to relate about the whole experience.

edited To correct names....  Justin is the grad student and Mathew is like Dean.

To be in on the finding of new planets, I cannot imagine anything more exciting and important!
