The Front Porch Swing

Suprisingly my worst tormentor was a horse nut. Heck. Everyone was a horse nut. And everyone got riding lessons, except for the poor kid (me), ofcourse.

Funny enough, pretty much all the folks I call friends are horse nuts these days

That or chicken nuts. Or both.

For all my high school misfits:

I love the Guild

Beware of those cruise ship drinks....  I drank something blue in a tall glass with a straw and pretty much dont remember the rest of the evening...  CUTE bartender though... I remember him.

Have soo much fun

I drank something called a coca loca and it was supposed to be non alcoholic. I'm not saying it wasn't, I'm just saying it made me so sick. I was sitting on the top level is the tender that takes you from the island to the ship and I lost it all over the bottom level. Ugh!

For those of you who prayed for me and my job interview, I want you to know that all our prayers were answered. I was offered a 3rd grade position at a school in Katy isd and I'm thrilled. Thank you guys!!
God is so good!! Congrats. You'll enjoy those kids. It's a great age.

A quick chick story

Yesterday we were doing well checks on all 24 chicks and as I grabbed Oreo Cookie, Cupcake came screaming over like how dare you touch her!
rant.gif
I thought it was a fluke so after I was almost done (with the clean bill of health for 24 TSC chicks YAY!) I picked her up again and the same thing happened. So, I guess they are bonded.

It will be interesting to see who ends up the top hen in this crowd.
I'm guessing that Cupcake may be a "he". Keep an eye on that one!!!

Having an amazing time! Will catch up whaen I can!
I'm so glad you're having a great time. Enjoy!!

OK front porch swingers - I need some good vibes on a job application I submitted on Friday. If I get the job, I can move to the new place and live with my hubby again.
Getting really tired of this separation and need to get there to weed the flower gardens! there are so many of them there. Here are a couple pics that DH sent.

I am thinking these are day lilies ... I'm hoping for tiger lilies ... I guess I will know when they bloom.

Love that old red barn! What a unique foundation.

We saw a lot of that style on our trip to Beloit to pick up younger daughter at school last month. Here old barns are mostly low rubble stone foundations. I look a lot at barns now that I ahve one

@heartsizedfarm , we just found out that those "Civil War era" chairs are probably not that old. The upholstery is new and there are probably some newer staples that were used for the reupholstering. That being said, the antique shop owners we consulted with were impressed with the deal we got and really liked the chairs otherwise.

Mom and I are actually really relieved. We had wanted to try our hand at reupholstering/retouching the chairs, but hadn't wanted to mess them up if they had original paint/parts/varnish. Now that we know that is not the case, I'm going to take the time and do some research on reupholstering. I'm thinking with those older chairs, I'm going to replace the cushions and the fabric. I also want to check all the legs and make sure they won't give out. There is a missing doule on one of them, so I need to replace it. Once they each get a new set of seats, I think I'm going to sand down the wood just a big and give it a tiny bit of a white wash to bring out the fabric. Mom wants to embroider something really pretty into the fabric.

I'm gonna post pics later. Mom wants original pics of them so we can fix them up again if we realize we were crazy for trying to fix them, haha!

Laura, you might want to have the furniture looked at by a professional restorer to get a quote. They can tell what is original and what is new and about how old it is by the construction. I have some furniture that was made before the Civil War by some family (not exactly sure). It has been recovered 3 times. The first in the 20's and then again about 10 years ago. Just this year I have a restorer fix the structure - the webbing that holds up the seat was so old it was just kind of shredding and some of the springs weren't connected any more either.

Just because someone else may have done a re-upholstering job that wasn't "kosher" doesn't mean it can not be corrected (true to period) so I wouldn't dive into it without knowing that first.

I feel the same way. I'm feeling especially distant from my only daughter, like she just can't be bothered with us. It makes me very sad. It seems like a lot of kids her age ( at 25 not really a kid though) have the same attitude that Becky has, so I don't think it is anything unique to her or how she was raised. I don't know. I was the oldest of 5 and my
Dad made it perfectly clear that family came first, and you don't have to like it, but you drop everything and come running when one of your own needs you. Not so much with this next generation.
Makes me sad that I wasn't able to keep that alive in my kids, like I some how disappointed my Dad by not passing it on.

You can try but who knows what will stick. As I've mentioned, I'm going to my oldest niece's wedding Friday. My step sisters (who my sister has known 98% of her life to date and gets along with well) were not. AND it turns out, neither were our Aunt and Uncle (Our father's brother) guess they made the 2nd or 3rd tier invitation list). Including her own children, my sister has exactly 14 living blood relatives). My girls don't cash gift checks until the thank you is mailed. My nieces don't even acknowledge the gift.

I hate to come here to complain, but I am STILL having almost daily e-mails with one particular supplier of feed ingredients in which I am asking them (now I'm begging) to send me information on their various products. STILL. It's been 10 days of me asking. I have ZERO information. None.

All I've gotten out of all of this hassle is a potential new egg customer.

Seriously folks, this is a major CORPORATION with a whole FEED DIVISION, and they cannot manage to send one person info about their products.

There is NO product info on their website.

I did some googling, and I found out the name of the guy who is president of the feed division for that company, and I will be calling him directly later today. In the next round of e-mails, I'll be ccing him, too.

That is the problem MAJOR corporation. The man that owns the market closest to the "farm" ordered uncured ham for me (I can't eat nitrates - migraines). Bet that wouldn't happen at a major chain store.

Heading to California now.

Have fun in California Bruce. Safe travels. Watch out for those tall blue glass drinks Blooie, unless the bartender is cute. WyoDreamer, is that barn foundation quarry stone or textured cement block?

I've got hands full today. Sleeping with the enemy! Two baby racoons in a cat carrier in the bathroom. Momma was wandering around aimlessly yesterday. I didn't know she was a momma. But I thought she looked sleepy and disoriented and noticed crusty eyes. (Vet thought maybe distemper? poor thing. Gone today.

So I'm cleaning the coop and hear a thump from upstairs in the barn and sure enough when I check little wee racoon crawling around. My son comes home to hold the ladder for me because I can hear another one up in the rafters.

So now they're wormed and I've got puppy milk replacer and instructions on when they're old enough to release (OCTOBER!!!!!) and my life just got a whole lot more busy!

I don't suppose anyone wants cute photos this being a chicken forum right?

Bruce, post a barn picture when you get back, please! I love barn pictures.

The barns around Wisconsin have so many different foundations it is just amazing. We looked at one just 7 miles away that was all field stone roughly mortared together. It was about the same age, but really needed to be taken down. Hopefully the people that bought that place do not have kids that will be allowed to play in it. It was really a dangerous place, so many of the floor boards were rotted out but it had a layer of old hay on the floor about 4" thick and you couldn't see the holes. Shudder

Do a Google search for Wisconsin Round Barns to see some really cool barns.

Have a great trip to California!

As a new bride, I went to a get together at ex's Mothers. After lunch, I went into the living room with the guys. Johnny leaned over and said, "You need to go to the kitchen and help with the clean up". What an eye opener. At my house, when we had company, dishes were put in the sink and done after everybody left. That way Mama could come in and enjoy her day. I never made that mistake again.
gig.gif

Yep...that's a biggie here and a way to gauge character, if the new brides jump in to help or if they just sit on the can while we do it all. My DIL would always say "Is there anything I can do to help?" instead of just jumping into help. ( If you have to ask, you obviously don't want to help, IME.) So, the last trip we all took together we gave her the rundown on our opinion of those who~ while sitting in the other room~ ask if they can help.....which is just a cop out way of volunteering without having any intentions of actually doing anything, so they can say later, "Well, I ASKED if they needed help!!!". That's like driving by someone stranded along the road and yelling out the window as you drive by, "Need any help???" as you whiz by.....

She must have actually listened, because now she doesn't ask, she just jumps in and helps and that's the mark of true family....even if you don't know where everything goes, you DO know that it needs washed, things need wiped off and put away, etc. Even a 5 yr old knows that much.
I use this technique, I gather up the dishes and fill the sink with steaming hot water, if someone comes in to help fine, if not, I let them "soak" til they leave. That way I don't miss anything.

Oh, and I don't invite the obnoxious ones anymore, who never want to be here in the first place. Time is too precious for BS.

We have obnoxious ones who invite themselves....always. Can't seem to get away from them. Big family.

Having an amazing time! Will catch up whaen I can!

Now, that's just cruel right there, Blooie......

Sippin' drinks on the cruise while we swelter in the heat and humidity.....I'm putting a thumb tack on the seat of your bucket before you come back.
