The Front Porch Swing

We are in the north-western part of VA, at the junction of MD, VA, and WV (not far from Charles Town, WV)). We just recently moved away from the suburbs to a more rural area. WE LOVE IT! Also helping to raise three granddaughters, that live with my husband, my daugther, and me.

My chickens are young. This is their first winter. They were hatched in late August. But the girls are laying eggs everyday! I have a very sweet rooster as well (Partridge rock). So, I may have chicks in the Spring/Summer, assuming that I have a broody hen. I understand that my brahmas are a breed that tend to go broody. Hope so.

My best roo was a PR...good, steady, gentle and smart birds. Wow, you've got your hands full! Bless you for helping to raise your grandkids..it's makes all the difference in their lives to not have to go to a stranger for baby sitting. My folks helped me raise my three boys while I worked and it was the closest thing I could get to being home with them myself. When we would go to the school for meetings, I'd bring my parents with me as the other half of my parenting unit and the school soon learned to accept that.

Nice country up there!

Think I will start reading the Old timers thread as well. I have lots to learn.
I am making plans to move the coop and remodel a safer and larger run. Will also add a brooder hutch. I will be doing most of the work myself. I will post pictures.

Just need to vent for a minute to release some stress/concern. Can I have the rocking chair in the corner? Rocking tends to sooth my nerves. I love rocking chairs.
A little background - DH is currently living in another state, and I am still here in Wyoming. I will join him there as soon as we sell our house this spring. So at least 3 more months apart. We usually talk on the phone everyday after work and again at bedtime every night. He is never without his phone - and gets frustrated with me if I forget mine at home when I go somewhere.
And to top it all off, I am a slight worry-wort. I come from a long line of worriers, with a couple of sisters that are Olympic caliber worriers.

Tonight, I have been calling him for the last three hours and the calls keep going to voicemail. I talked to him around lunchtime while at work, he called me with some news, and told him I would talk to him when I got home when we said goodbye. I guess not. I am sure he is fine, and I keep telling myself that, but it is just frustrating. And honestly, what can I do anyway if something IS wrong?

Rock, rock, rock.

Sorry, this whole thing is just silly.

welcome to all. sit back on the chair and relax. id like a cold lemon aid please.
i never heated my coops to this winter. i just heated enough to keep the ferment going and the water from freezing. unfortunately i lost all my birds to illness. i had rhode island reds that would make your head spin. just gorgeous birds. well their gone. im in the middle of rebuilding. so i got me some nice quality barnevelders. them barnies are sure good looking birds. i have 17 in the house. i can't wait for the weather to break. them guys will go out in the yard. i watch them a bit. then i cull my non- breeders. get them situated. then i do another breed. the boy here wants polish for his 4-h so i got him 12 WC polish. will see what he does.with them
im think of doing a bantam for a change what you all think of them cornish.? i think they look like they belong as a hood ordament on a mak truck pulling a tyson trailer.

I've got one of my Cornish X defrosting in the fridge so I can roast it tomorrow. I know we aren't supposed to, but I like them. Yum! Then I only have two left from the ten we raised last spring/summer. :(

Then I get to start on the turkeys! :D

Welcome to the porch!!!

It's funny you should ask for a rocker because someone once told me worrying was like rocking in a rocking chair...a lot of back and forth motion but you never really get anywhere. It's a little symbolic that you are a generational worrier and you like to rock.
